They are constantly one of the best in the state and the tri-state area, but their premier, highest level team, their 17U HGSL team, has some serious talent on it. They were down at Boo Williams this weekend and showed out. Here’s a quick look at some of this stacked roster.
Maggie Cavanaugh – 5-8 G, St. Rose (2023)
Cavanaugh has found her way around the basketball court over the past three seasons, but settled nicely into a starting role for St. Rose this season. She’s developed a great three-point shot while being aggressive as a scorer and rebounder. Her passing has come a long way since her freshman year and was on full display down in Virginia. She’s a double-double caliber player when everything clicks and has the potential to add five or so assists a game in there too.
Casey Prior – 5-7 G, Red Bank Catholic (2023)
Prior is in an incredibly good place with RBC right now and in her high school career, coming off career-highs across the board. Her shooting is one of the best in the Shore Conference and we’ve already seen her light up the scoreboard during the AAU season. Prior is a high-usage perimeter shooter with great off-ball skills, a quick shot and flawless release. Everything looks so easy and natural for her and it’s made her into a must-watch shooter this summer.
Emma Carman – 5-11 G/F, Red Bank Catholic (2023)
A high school teammate of Prior, Carman is going to settle well into a forward role for the Casey this coming season. Her senior year is poised to be a big one as is her AAU season leading up to the fall/winter. Carman is tall and a big body in the lane, which is a fantastic thing because she boxes out well and controls the pace of play inside the paint. She attacks the glass well and with more practice and time playing in that starting role, should be a force. Expect to see Carman work on her agility and length this summer as she learns more how to play in that starter role.
Breana Delaney – 5-9 G, St. John Vianney (2023)
Delaney was one of SJV’s first options off the bench and a fringe starter for the best team in the state last season. Heading into her senior year, Delaney is expected to compete heavily for a starting role and this summer will be a big determining factor. We know she can shoot well from beyond the arc and she can defend well on the perimeter and closer to the paint. However, the biggest things we want to see with her is how much better of a rebounder and passer she can become. The more well-rounded of a player Delaney can be, the more vital she becomes for the high school season.
