Continue ReadingWhile taking in two days of action at the USJN Gateway Challenge in St Louis, we got a glimpse of the future when we watched some up and coming players from the Class of 2027. Prep Girls Hoops Missouri takes a look at a few of the young players who you will see making an impact in the high school ranks in a couple of years.
Dasia Scott (Midwest United 15U): A 6’0″ forward who played two levels up at 15U and more than held her own. In fact, she handing out work to older players with her strength and physical play in the low post. Her footwork was excellent as she could maneuver inside for buckets with both hands. She could also put the ball on the floor from the high post and score on a strong dribble drive.
Ryenn Gordon (Mo Phenom 13U-Koelling): A 5’5″ guard who helped lead her team to a pool championship with her athleticism and high energy play. She displayed very good anticipation on the top of her team’s full court press to produce steals and deflections. She attacked well on the dribble and could hit the high-arching 3-pointer.
Sophie Shapiro (Warrenton Warriors): A talented 5’7″ guard who plays with a little flair in her game. She has smooth handles and a nice array of escape moves to drop off defenders to get to the basket. She has a nice finishing touch on her runners from different angles. She also has good court vision to drop dimes while on the move.
Laila Boylan (Della Lamb 14U-Adidas): A talented 5’9″ guard who knows how to make things happen when she enters the game. She could grab a rebound and go coast to coast with the basketball. She had several nice finishes in the lane with either hand. She is a very confident player who has a little flair in her game.
Simone Walker (Mo Phenom 13U-Koelling): A 6’1″ forward who has good mobility and length to control the action in the paint. She catches the ball well and keeps it high to finish. She’s very good on the boards as she can get out of her area and she fully extends to grab the rebound at its highest point. She also runs the court very well.
Sophia Benke (Warrenton Warriors): A 5’5″ guard with a nice feel for the game and good instincts on the defensive end. She darted into the passing lanes very well on the full court press. She displayed a nice shooting stroke from 3-point range. She can also free herself up for a 3-pointer off the dribble with a nice use of the ball fake and good footwork.
Ann Volmert (Mo Phenom 13U-Koelling): A 5’2″ point guard who keeps the tempo going fast and furious with her speed and quickness. She’s a one-girl press breaker as she can stay low on the dribble and weave through traffic to set up teammates for layups on the back end. She’s an excellent floor leader who distributes the ball and keeps everyone involved.
Fallon Jones (Warrenton Warriors): A 5’10″ forward with has good length and mobility around the basket. She did a nice job of finishing around the basket with both hands. She also had a good presence on the defensive end with her ability to block shots.
