Most of them will see more of the court for various reasons: seniors graduating, a change of coach, a change of scenery, or just another year of maturity. Each of these players has her own story, and as Juniors, they will all play significant roles on their teams. With Summer ball starting this week, these players will get to make their marks in games, practices, and workouts.
Regan Chappell Regan Chappell 5'7" | SG DME Academy | 2024 State FL , 2024 SG (Ponte Vedra) (pictured above). Chappell is one of the best-kept secrets on the First Coast and she has some serious game. Chappell knows how to put the ball in the basket and she can do so as fast as anyone on possession changes. Chappell can shoo the three, has a great midrange, and can also use the glass in the midrange area. Chappell is very fundamentally sound and can score in flurries. As a Freshman, Chappell was a standout in the district playoffs. As a sophomore, Chappell knocked down 37 threes for the season.
Amina Yassin, 2024 SG (Mandarin HS). Yassin might be an unknown in the State, but she made her presence felt last basketball season on the First Coast. Not only did Yassin have a decent year, she also started a handful of games. Yassin can do a lot of things on the court. She loves to shoot the three and she can knock it down. Last season Yassin knocked down 8 threes in a limited role. She can handle the ball and she does well in transition, filling the wing and passing to open teammates. Yassin is good enough to start for the Mustangs in the next basketball season.
Cheyenne Jenkins, 2024 PF (Middleburg). Jenkins brought the force last year when I saw her on the courts. She is strong and physical and doesn’t back down from any physical contact. Defensively, she plays on the wings and despite being 5’8, she had the physicality to mix it up on the inside. Jenkins averaged 6.1 points per game last year but put up several games in double digits, including a 12-point performance against Menendez and 14 points against Yulee.
Irvieona Gantt, 2024 SF (Mandarin). Gantt made some good contributions last basketball season. Gantt started for over a quarter of the season and was a major contributor in many ways. Gantt rebounds, three-pointers (6), and 49 assists. Defensively, Gantt had 46 steals and averaged 2.2 steals per game. Gantt performed well in the AAU season and has shown significant improvement in the intensity and speed departments. She was an all-around contributor last year and with the departure of 4 starting seniors, she will have an increased role next season.
Gia Dodaro, 2024 PG (Bolles). When Dodaro walks onto the courts, she immediately makes her presence felt. She plays with a ton of energy on both sides of the court. As a guard who is only 5 ‘0″ Dodaro pulled down 84 rebounds for the season. Dodaro is feisty and doesn’t back down from a challenge on the court. She is very good in press-break and puts pressure on defenses with her ability to take the ball to the goal.
Sydney Kenney, 2024 G (Orange Park). When you talk about the consummate team player, look no further than Kenney. She has patiently played her part as a role player for a talented Orange park team and has progressed each season and offseason. This summer will be big for Kenney as she prepares for her Junior season. Kenney brings energy to the floor on the offense and defensive ends of the court. She can shoot the three and can also drive the ball to the goal. Kenney is another player who doesn’t back down from challenges on the court, and she definitely won’t be backing down from the challenge and opportunity that this summer brings.
