Academy of the Holy Names is hosting a June Summer League between 8 high schools in the area: Holy Names, Berkeley Prep, Bloomingdale, Newsome, Tampa Catholic, Keswick Christian, Seffner Christian, and Sumner. They’ll face off against each other on Tuesday’s and Thursday’s this month before being seeded in brackets on the last Tuesday (28th) and Thursday (30th) of June. Here is a look at some of the top defenders in this Tampa league: [player_tooltip player_id="442249" first="Kyrstin" last="Wolff"] | Bloomingdale | 2023 Kyrstin is one of the best shot blockers in this league. She has height, length, and good timing on her block attempts. I really like her communication on both ends of the floor, too. Kyrstin is consistently getting better and could have a real presence inside on the boards and the scorebook if she continues to work at it. Bloomingdale has a lot of good pieces all over the floor that could make them a dangerous team if they stay healthy as a 25-win, Final Four team from last year. [player_tooltip player_id="247216" first="Aissa" last="Diallo"] | Bloomingdale | 2023 Aissa is a speedy guard that jumps those passing lanes, stays active on defense, and can elevate to block a shot. She will put her body on the line to draw a charge or just strip the ball away from you. Once she creates that turnover, she pushes it in transition for a bucket from anywhere or drops it over to her teammate for a score. Aissa is a well-rounded player that has the ability to take this Bloomingdale squad to the next level. [player_tooltip player_id="426334" first="Treniti" last="Fluker"] | Tampa Catholic | 2024 Treniti is a stock riser for me in the 2024 class in Florida. She has speed and athleticism that cause a lot of trouble for ball handlers. Her hands are active and she has a knack for keeping a hand on the ball or snagging a steal. Treniti can also get it done on the other end by getting to the rim with that speed and slashing ability. Tampa Catholic is going to surprise some folks this year and it will start with that defensive pressure they apply, especially from Treniti. [player_tooltip player_id="442252" first="Jinnae" last="Williams"] | Newsome | 2023 Jinnae is exactly what Newsome needs in a PG. She sees the floor well and distributes it before looking to score, and another thing that really impressed me was her defense. Jinnae likes to put pressure on the ball and focuses in by reading the opponent to come up with timely steals or deflections. Her energy is always high and she's the kind of player you want to have on your team as a player and a coach. [player_tooltip player_id="442278" first="Noelle" last="Mengel"] | Bloomingdale | 2025 Noelle has good size and length for her position, and she possesses a lot of skill in every facet of the game as a 2025 hooper. She uses that length to disrupt passing lanes and discourage any easy passes from being made. Her stance is low, and she gets up on the ball which puts pressure on some guards that unfortunately aren't able to handle the ball in that situation. As she continues to develop her solid all-around game, she has the potential to be a top 75 player in her class on a Bloomingdale squad that has a lot of 2023 talent going into their final school year. [player_tooltip player_id="442273" first="Theresa" last="Hospodarek"] | Newsome | 2023 Theresa is arguably the second best all-around player on Newsome behind Kayla. On defense, she's all over the place with good control that leads to multiple steals per game. I like her aggressiveness on the defensive end as she doesn't make it easy to do anything from dribbling to passing to shooting. On the offensive end, she can shoot it from deep, find her open teammate, or rebound it well for her size on both sides. Newsome could be in for another successful year with the Senior leadership of Theresa, Kayla, Jinnae, and Anna.
Brandon Fisher is a Senior Scout for Prep Girls Hoops Florida and a Regional Scout for the PGH Circuit.
