Point Guards Who Impressed at National Championship

The point guard position was well represented at National Championship. Some of the point guards are great scorers, some were great floor generals, some were great playmakers, and some could do it all. In this article, we look at some of the point guards who stood out at the National Championship in Orlando.

[player_tooltip player_id='91658' first='Olivia' last='Davis'] / 2023 / 5'7" PG / Always 100 Florida 2023. (Pictured Above)

Davis is like the coach on the floor. There is so much trust in her abilities and as a result, every offensive set runs through her. What's special to watch is that she makes the correct read and gets the ball where it needs to go almost every time. She is like a quarterback, just reacting to what the defense is giving her and just picking the defense apart. If a teammate's defender shades too much to Davis, she dishes to her teammate for an open jump shot. If her defender sits back, Davis raises up with a 3-point shot. If the defender is leaning or over-commits, Davis will make them pay with a drive to the goal. And Davis is as savvy as they come drawing fouls. Davis played well and was one of the top point guards at the National Championship.

[player_tooltip player_id='247118' first='Sophia' last='Rueppell'] / 2023 / 5'9" PG / East Coast United Family 2023 .

Rueppell is as steady as they come. She is cool and calm out on the court and just personifies leader in everything she does on the court. Nothing is flashy, but the basketball IQ stands out. She doesn't force the issue and is one of the best at just letting the game come to her. Leave her open and she will kill you with the three and she can string together in a hurry. At National Championship, she understood the personnel on the floor and made decisions on the court accordingly. Rueppell was very impressive in the pick and roll game. At times, she drew the defense and created shooting space for her teammates. When her "bigs" were cooking, she made nice passes to them out of the pick and roll set. Rueppell also did very well at shooting out of the pick and roll. Rueppell had a very special summer in Louisville, Indianapolis, and Orlando, and the talented guard has garnered multiple offers as a result. She is one of the hottest recruits in the State of Florida.

[player_tooltip player_id='243948' first='Maggie' last='Lauber'] / 2023 / 5'6" PG / 2023 Nona Basketball Academy

Lauber gets up and down the court in a blur and I am always in awe of the athleticism she brings to the court. She has good handles and can run the offense. She has a really quick first step and can really get to the rim, especially from the right side. She can also get in the heart of the defense with crossovers and great footwork. Whether she is leading the break or filling the lanes, she can really run the floor in transition. She really is a team player and plays in sync with her teammates and she always reads the situation and knows how to get to the open spots on the floor. She is a solid defensive player who plays good on-ball defense and uses her speed to play the passing lanes.

[player_tooltip player_id='166213' first='Bre'asia' last='Washington'] / 2023 / 5'5" PG / FGB Elite Thompson E40 17U/

Washington is so athletic, she impresses even when she is just walking on the court. She is a dynamic player with the ball in her hands and has a skill set that includes handling the ball, great footwork, explosiveness, etc. Washington can shoot from all levels of the court, but she is most consistent and at her best when she gets in the midrange area. The way she gets in the paint is the most impressive part of her game. She can beat you off the drive, she can beat a defender with a deadly crossover dribble, or with her shiftiness and great footwork. Washington is also good at getting defenders off balance or up in the air before getting her shot off. At National Championship, Washington was also good in pick and roll. She made good passes and got to the basket when the defenders were slow to switch to her. At National Championship, Washington showed she could run the point guard position, but she is even more dynamic when at the two position. Defensively, she has great speed, great lateral movement, and is an in-your-face defender. In a zone defense, she is ideal at the top, because of the wide range that she covers on the floor.

[player_tooltip player_id='214172' first='Beckham' last='Hockley'] / 2024 / 5'8" PG / East Coast United Family 2024

Hockley was impressive on the final day of the National Championship and really put her team on her back. Down an extra ball handler, Beck did whatever it took to help her team with primary ball-handling duties and scoring duties. In one game, she single-handedly kept her team in the game and displayed an incredible desire to win. She showed the ability to drive the ball to the basket with either hand and finish on either side. Several times the drives were after expelling a lot of energy beating the press and she still had enough in the tank to attack the basket. Beck showed she could shoot the rock from multiple levels on the court. A few times she was able to catch and shoot, but most of the time she scored off the dribble with a defender on her.

The point guard position was well represented at National Championship. Some of the point guards are great scorers, some were great floor generals, some were great playmakers, and some could do it all. In this article, we look at some of the point guards who stood out at the National Championship in Orlando.
