The National Championship event in Orlando, FL falls on the final three days of the live evaluation period to conclude the summer recruiting period. Here are some of the top 2023 post players that have stood out.
Khyala Ngodu 6’3 Forward (Miami Suns Team Fowles 17U EYBL)
Ngodu has been a hot name this summer amongst D1 college coaches. She is one of the top post players that is comfortable playing with her back to the basket and has ability to finish with both hands. She is consistently in the action in the paint, staying on the offensive and defensive glass. She shoots a high percentage on offensive putbacks off rebounds and on dump passes from penetrating guards. She is an active defender who rebounds the ball well, guards well on the low block and perimeter, and stays active deflecting passes and stealing entry passes.
Michelle Ugwah 6’1 Forward (2023 DME)
Ugwah was a new face for me this week as she previously lived in Arizona and was coming off an ACL injury and had missed some substantial time. At 6’1, she has a fit, strong body. She plays hard and is very active. She runs the floor hard, goes to the offensive and defensive glass consistently, pursues balls, and moves well. Her activity level is intriguing as well as the combination of her build and athleticism. Offensively she is most effective with touches at the mid and high post where she can face up and attack the basketball.
Uniyah Franklin 6’2 Forward (FGB Running Rebels Black 17U)
Franklin body really grabs you in warmups. She has excellent length, great size, and is physically fit and strong. She is an active player that plays hard on both ends of the floor, runs the floor hard, and uses her length and athleticism to get her hands on balls. Her offensive skill set needs to continue to develop as in the games I saw her play, she did not finish well. But she has a ton of potential and with 6’0+ players being in high demand, will be a name that college coaches will get off the road and discuss how she fits into their style of play and roster.
Joelle Wilson 5’11 Forward (Miami Suns South Mompremier 17U)
Wilson is an active defender who improves with every time I see her. She does a good job grabbing defensive boards and advancing the ball to start the break. She can cover inside and on the perimeter. I love her activity level around the rim and in the paint. Despite being undersize, she covered players 2-4 inches taller and did good job covering them ¾ or front and not allowing them to get low post touches or stepping around to get steals. She has soft hands and does good job finishing around the rim and pursuing loose balls.
