Continue ReadingI am excited about this new opportunity to show these young ladies of Alabama some more love. This is the start also recognizing talent in their respective home areas. The Birmingham Metro area is full of players that are also ranked in the state-wide rankings and a couple of newcomers. So I hope everyone will enjoy this read, and learn some new names. This list is in alphabetical order.
Audra Benson Audra Benson 5’6″ | SG Hewitt-Trussvile | 2023 State AL is THE shooter on this Hewitt-Trussville loaded roster. Her favorite is that corner shot, and if you lose her, she will make you pay. Audra is also very active on the defense side of the ball, with her lanky frame she is very disruptive, and can also guard multiple positions. She is an all-around player and one of the engines for Coach Tonya Hunter and her program.
Shorty as she is known on and off the court was Wenonah’s leading scorer as a freshman in her second year on varsity. She will scores at will, sees the floor well and hates to lose. Samarian Franklin Samarian Franklin 5’5″ | PG Wenonah | 2025 State AL plays the game with a lot of passion and it carries over to her teammates. That is why she is one of the top 10 players in her class.
Sarah Gordon Sarah Gordon 5’11” | PF Vestavia Hills | 2025 State AL was the newcomer of the year in Class 7A All-State ranking as a freshman. She was instrumental in her team getting to the State Championship game with her ability to score; always in the right place at the right time. Her shot is pure and shows she works in the gym a lot in her off time. Her basketball IQ is very high, and is that coach on the floor; she is one of many returning sophomores for Vestavia that will aid in their continued presence in the Class 7A girls basketball.
Highlights
Jordan Hunter Jordan Hunter 5’10” | C Hewitt-Trussville | 2024 State AL , the Auburn commit is making her name known in the state of Alabama Girls’ Basketball, and has been in the gym since her younger days. Another player in this area that is ranked in the top 10 of her class’ state rankings. Jordan has the ability to score off the dribble or take that pull-up jumper. With Hewitt-Trussville’s defense, she is usually on the top of the press, with that 5-10 long frame, she will slow down the ball and defend in the passing lane with those long arms.
Reniya Kelly Reniya Kelly 5’8″ | PG Hoover | 2023 State AL , THE best girl basketball player in the state of Alabama is also from this area. She has been on varsity since the end of her 7th grade season, where she led her middle school team through an undefeated season and the Over The Mountain Championship, and the next day was on the varsity bench at Hoover HS; then eventually playing in the state championship game, and has not looked back. Reniya is an old-fashioned point guard, she looks to get her teammates involved in the game but don’t be fooled because she can and will score by any means necessary. Reniya will drive to the basket, she will shoot the mid-range or the trey ball, then her athleticism helps her on defense because she will anticipate those passes, jump that lane and will score; oh yes and if you foul her she will make her free throws. Reniya has committed to North Carolina Tar Heels for her next step in basketball.
This is another player that has been on varsity since 8th grade, Kristen McMillan Kristen McMillan 6’2″ | PF Hoover | 2023 State AL has always been dominant in the post. She is very hard worker in the post pulling in all the offensive and defensive rebounds that come her way, and also takes charges. On the offensive side, Kristen has a nice jumper at the top of the key, and can put it on the floor and drive to the basket. Her height and court vision puts her at an advantage on the court most of the time. She has won multiple state championships, thus giving her that winning mindset. She has committed to Central Arkansas WBB program for her next move after finishing at Hoover High School.
Next up is Ghanaye Moss Ghanaye Moss 5’10” | SF Hueytown | 2023 State AL better known as “Sug” or “Sugamomma”; this is one of if not the most athletic player in the state of Alabama. She also plays travel volleyball on a very competitive team. She will block a lot of shots and get up high for all rebounds. She has a very explosive move to the basket, and with her vertical movement its an easy score. Not sure if Sug has every dunk in a game, but I have heard she can dunk. Looking forward to her senior year at Hueytown being exciting.
When looking for a hard working player, look no further than Jaylen Pleasant Jaylen Pleasant 5’5″ | PG Mortimer Jordan | 2023 State AL from Mortimer Jordan. She works extremely hard every time she is on the court; whether it is pressuring the ball on defense or making things happen on the offensive side of the ball. Jaylen can flat out score, and be a headache for her opponent. Coach Robinson and his MJ squad are expecting to make a run deep into the post season.
Otiscia Towns Otiscia Towns 5’7″ | PG Parker | 2025 State AL known as “OT” is the floor general for a young A. H. Parker HS squad. She is looking to build off of an impressive freshman campaign, where her basketball IQ shined bright even in this early stage of development. OT looks to facilitate first but once she catches a rhythm offensively she is a hard guard to contain. Crafty with the rock and finishes well. This 2025 has a high motor and major upsides.
Angela Williams
Angela Williams
Angela Williams is the youngest in this group and her future is bright. She is extremely active on offense whether it’s a jump shot, layup or getting the ball to her open teammate. Angela also has that college body and with weight training now that she is in high school, she will be what we call “a problem”; that’s a good thing for Shades Valley and Coach Ferguson.
