Continue ReadingIt’s only fitting that after we look at some talented athletes in the Capitol-North, we look at the Capitol-South. Last season, New Glarus, Cambridge, and Belleville took home a share of the conference title with a 7-3 record. However, the Glarner Knights of New Glarus were just one game away from the Resch Center, losing to eventual champions Mineral Point in the Sectional Final.
Lindsey Schadewalt Lindsey Schadewalt 5'10" | SG New Glarus | 2024 State WI
The reigning conference player of the year is an uber-talented wing that can score from all three levels on the floor. Schadewalt led the Capitol-South in scoring last season with 19.8 points and shot a healthy 41.8% from behind the 3-point line. There aren’t many players in Wisconsin as well versed at scoring off the dribble as the Glarner Knight. She may not have the reputation of a kid who can shake a defender on the perimeter, but when I see Schadewalt, she utilizes jab steps and hesitation and finds open spaces to either shoot or get to the basket. I love watching her game.
Brooke Stenklyft Brooke Stenklyft 5'11" | SF Cambridge | 2025 State WI
The 5-foot-11 2025 wing has an intriguing skill set. Stenklyft has the size and strength of a traditional four at the high school level, but she moves like a guard. I love what she does on the perimeter because of her quickness with the ball in her hands. Her first step is something she utilizes on multiple occasions during a game, and every time it creates an advantage for her and her team. The ability she has to play both inside and will be valuable anywhere she plays.
Allie Rateike
The Marshall Cardinal is a craft guard who seems to find ways to exploit most defenses. She has a jumper, which she can use to shoot teams out of zones or utilize a pump fake to attack recovering defenses. What I like even more than her shooting is her well-rounded offensive game. She can play in the mid-post, execute a rip-through, get to the baseline and finish or attack the middle and create for her teammates.
Saveea Freeland Saveea Freeland 5'9" | CG Cambridge | 2024 WI
The Cambridge wing is a strong kid who can handle pressure with the ball in her hands. Freeland can pass the ball well. The rising junior also sees the action on the floor and digests what’s happening around her. Freeland is a weapon when she gets a touch because she can hit cutters from anywhere on the court for an easy basket or put pressure on the rim when she attacks the basket.
