That did not mean the basketball calendar stopped for many of the Palmetto State’s best and brightest talents – it merely meant that they were trading their high school jerseys for their AAU colors for the spring and summer months.
South Carolina’s presence was certainly felt all club season long. At local events and at get-togethers as part of national tournaments, there were plenty of young stars from the state that got the attention of many a scout and many a coach.
Without further adieu, here is our All-AAU Team among the state’s rising juniors.
There are few across South Carolina that entered the travel season with more momentum than Hutchinson. She led the Eagles to a fourth consecutive SCISA 2A championship and continued her great play in the travel realm. Hutchinson plays with a tough and tenacious talent who attacks the rim, can sink her attempts from 3-point range, is difficult to contain and delivers accurate passes. Among the litany of events she competed in were LBI March Madness, LBI Summer Showcase and Prep Girls Hoops Circuit events that included Southeast Slam and the Triumph Region Finals.
Scott also entered the travel schedule following a wave of momentum when the Rams went back-to-back in winning 4A state championships. Scott was a top performer at Phenom Lady Rumble at Concord’s Carolina Courts and was one at well at War Games/Summer Slam at the Suwanee Sports Academy in Georgia. Her game includes the ability to drain 3-pointers and play productive minutes on the defensive side. Scott possesses a high basketball IQ and her defensive skills include trapping opposing ball carriers to put them in position to potentially be turnover-prone.
Highlights
With a 6-foot-1 frame, Kitt presents an advantage over many a frontcourt foe as she is one of two on the Team USC Unleashed roster at that particular height. She puts herself in position to convert on high-percentage shots near the basket and can gather either defensive or offensive rebounds. She has no issues drawing contact that place her at the free throw line and can get her own rebound if she is unsuccessful at the stripe. Among the events Kitt’s stellar play came through were Knoxville Knockout on the Prep Girls Hoops Circuit and the Lowcountry Summer Shootout in Summerville.
The calling card for Cothran is, of course, the 3-point shot. One of the most prolific sharpshooters in the state, she had the hot hand from deep on plenty of occasions during the Prep Girls Hoops Circuit. These included at the Triumph Region Finals in Spartanburg and before that at Music City Showdown in Tennessee. That attribute to her game is one that will keep many a defense honest. She can play as either a guard or a wing and knows when to score and when to pass. Cothran looks poised for a big 2022-23 with the 5A Cavaliers.
It is a liberating feeling for any baller when she is on the court and she sees that an opponent has zero answers. That was the case for Waiters at Lowcountry Summer Shootout in Summerville when her team matched up against SHOTS United. Some of the scores she got were off of steals that she seamlessly turned into transition baskets. Waiters also distributes the ball with efficiency and takes a fearless attitude into every game she plays. Waiters is one of those talents that is so active on the court it makes teams ask themselves if there is more than one of her on the floor.
