The venue was overflowing with some of the premier talent in the Palmetto State – and players from all points of said state arrived to take part. Over 100 showed up and were sorted into 12 teams.
Those that were in attendance saw an impressive showing from the 2024 class – particularly from the many junior guards. Here is a look at the backcourt stalwarts that caught our attention.
In 2021-22, the 1A Gators only dropped two games last season along with going a perfect 9-0 in its region. Ford played a major role in Lake View’s success last season and with two star seniors having graduated, it creates a great opportunity for her to be the focal point of the team going forward. Ford has no problems playing the game on contact and finding her way to the free throw line. She can be particularly effective with her midrange jump shot and defensively she can gather steals and create extra possessions for her team. Lake View’s run in the 1A playoffs only came to a screeching halt at the hands of the buzzsaw that is eventual two-time state champion Military Magnet.
Following a noteworthy grassroots campaign with Team USC Unleashed 2024, Geddis carried that momentum to the Rhodes Sports Center and hopes it continues throughout 2022-23. Attacking the rim is one of the hallmarks of her game as she will find lanes that will enable her to finish at the rim. Geddis throws defenses for a loop as they are unsure if she will attack or shoot from the open floor. She can operate at either one of the two backcourt positions. Geddis was one of 2A Woodland’s team captains last season and played in all 21 matchups last season for the Wolverines.
Highlights
Transfer procedures from Westwood were why she was unavailable for the War Eagles last season. With her available and a new head coach, Mintz’sGray Collegiate squad is a threat to claim 2A supremacy at the conclusion of the season. Included in her notable skillset is the ability to get the rock into the interior and her accuracy from downtown. She does many of the little things that may not show up on the stat sheet such as hustling for loose balls in addition to create extra possessions for her team. Incoming coach Brandon Wallace will be excited to see what he has in this talented veteran star.
The Bulldogs have become a team the past two seasons that is circle-the-date-on-the-
When thinking about players that have defined 5A Sumter’s recent string of success, one cannot help but identify this skilled guard who has also ran on the grassroots circuit with Palmetto 76ers. Sanders works for everything she obtains on the court. She is willing to do many of the little things that can have a big impact towards victory – including diving for loose balls. Sanders fuses together speed and agility with a skill for taking care of the ball and limiting turnovers. She displays her court vision regularly, makes accurate passes to her teammates and can absorb contact to get to the free throw line.
Coach Jeff Schaffer has to hope that the point guard tandem of Sanders and Brown will mean positive fortunes as the Gamecocks look to establish themselves once again as a 5A team to beat. Brown has participated in track and field and cross country as well as basketball throughout her athletic career. Defensively, she gives opponents issues with the amount of steals she can rack up. Brown is skilled as a ball handler and gives a team a scoring dimension from out in the perimeter. She has ran on the grassroots circuit with Sumter Elite 2024 during the spring and summer months.
