Okay, I know I say I hate watching videos, yet Wayland Baptist University Head Coach, Jason Cooper told me “Simmie don’t worry, it will be okay” and I didn’t and it was.
Let me also give him a special S/O for helping identify some of the players I missed during games because of the angles and numbers I couldn’t catch properly so with that being said, this is from the games. I dropped the Skills and Drills Tip Sheets on my website HS and MS
2023
Sara Casner Sara Casner 5'7" | SG Silverton | 2023 TX -5’7 G/F (Silverton)
Casner left a lasting first impression a couple of years ago, not because we have the same initials but because she is a definite #THRO WBA CK player. She simply gets after it, loves to BATTLE for everything, and plays taller than she is yet her doing things instinctively offensively is special
Jadyn Trusler-5’8 SG (Dalhart)
Trusler did damage on the inside during the SKILLS and I wrote “she players bigger than her size” yet here we go, during the games, she lit it up from the outside. She’s fundamentally sound, and heady and does whatever her team needs as she understands how to get hers “in the flow”
Braelyn Sellers-5’5 PG (Pampa)
Sellers isn’t flashy and plays within herself, that’s always good but she also showed she could score using basic fundamentals. Her pull-up jumper while being defended was nice yet her all-around game wasn’t flashy yet very effective
2024
Azalea Alaniz-5’5 PF (Hereford)
Alaniz can push it, SWB, the speed with the ball and under control, coupled with seeing the floor is always big yet she adds even more. Yeah, she makes good decisions and showed she could score even deeper than I saw during the SKILLS. She falls into that “makes those around her better” category
Azaylee Santos-5’4 PG (Floydada)
Santos scored well during the SKILLS yet UH-OH, she flipped the switch. She’s heady and plays within herself yet she can also take over a game with the blink of an eye offensively and her mid to very long-range coupled with “off the dribble” finishes made her hard to handle
Jaydan Bagwell-5’6 CG (Valley)
Bagwell is arguably one of the best shooters in Texas Class A, which was solidified during the 5-on-5 session. Yeah, she shot it well in the SKILLS but she SHOT it very well. Her ability to see the floor makes her an even bigger threat on the offensive end
Taylor Wallace Taylor Wallace 5'10" | PF Plainview | 2024 TX -5’10 WHATEVER (Plainview)
Wallace is unique because she can actually play all 5 positions. A polished skill set fits perfectly as she falls into that “nightmare to defend” category because at her size, she can shoot it from almost anywhere, score off the dribble as well as inside the paint
2025
Caitlin Hull-5’2 G (Christ The King)
Hull scored from multiple spots during the pre-game festivities and I mention she understood how to run a team and saw the floor however when the bright lights came on, aka 5 on 5, she went into another zone and also showed she could drop the long ball, both effortlessly and consistently
2026
Emerson Plummer-5’10 C/F
Plummer showed even more during the games, her “hands and footwork” were in full effect, here we go, #THRO WBA CK. She has more than a solid upside, she understands the game and plays within herself, her mobility around the basket enabled her to do some damage
Braya Smith-5’10 F (Amarillo)
Smith is “long and athletic” and one more time, that is the base. She is on her way to becoming one of the region’s top wings because she can score in multiple ways, that first step is powerful, and so are her finishes, after contact
Zyliah Strickland-5’6 PG (Texhoma)
Strickland has something I love to see in younger players, she does things instinctively and she’s always looking for the best shot, either for her to take or for her teammates, yes, she sees the floor. Her first step sold me yet she’s added the step-back with her jumper
Zariah Strickland-5’6 CG/F (Texhoma)
Strickland is VOCAL on the court and when you factor in she’s solid on both ends of the floor, that’s a big plus. She created her shot well in the SET, did it even better during the games, and dropped it while being defended
Arissa Alaniz Arissa Alaniz 5'7" | CG Hereford | 2026 State TX -5’5 CG (Hereford)
Alaniz simply finds ways to put the ball in the basket, either attacking and finishing strongly, scoring mid to long-range, or setting teammates up to get assists. She’s quick and heady and more than ready for whatever because, at this stage, she’s ahead of the game a whole lot
2027
Angelina Hernandez-5’5 G (Randall)
Hernandez is another “you won’t outwork me” type of player and shows it on both ends. She showed she could get to the rim multiple ways in the SKILLS as well as in the games yet her finishing over and over after contact as well as dropping the jumper were nice
Mazzy Budd-5’5 G/F Bonham)
Budd showed a different side of her game in the 5-on-5 session. Yeah, she scored from the midrange earlier yet she created her shot even better during the games and dropped them with a hand in her face. She also THINKS the game, doesn’t overdo it, JUST DOES IT
Kadynce Ramirez-5’0 PG (Hereford Preparatory)
Ramirez is heady and understands how to control the tempo as well as run a team. I used the #sizedontmatter hashtag because she can play in the SKILLS session yet her fundamentally sound game from the 1 tells me she is going to do some damage
Jaylyne Bjork-5’0 PG (Crockett)
Bjork was a pleasant surprise, yeah she’s quick and can handle the ball well under pressure but there’s more. She has a variety of moves to get the defender leaning, she also sees the floor, and one more time, that CROSSOVER tricked me, and I watched it on video
Kamryn Soukup-5’7 G (Bonham)
Soukup used her length on both ends and her ability to move fluidly on both ends. She played the passing lane, and she also did a good job defending yet her fundamentals are solid and she takes good shots, knocks them down, and sees the floor
Carmello Guerrero-5’5 G (Bonham)
Guerrero falls into that “never takes a play off” type of player and her going all out had me smiling, let me drop #THRO WBA CK for that. She created her shot to score off the dribble and showed she could knock down the jumper while being defended
Austyn Flowers-5’9 C/F (Seminole)
Flowers scored even better around the basket during the games as she understands how to use her body and maneuver in the paint, footwork, and caught whatever was thrown to her, hands. She also created contact and finished after the lick
2028
Haven Pointer-5’5 G (Bushland)
Pointer is one of the top guards I have seen in her class, I mentioned that explosiveness in the SKILLS yet her BB-IQ and athletic ability is going to create huge problems. The midrange is smooth, especially “stop and pop” in transition plus she’s VOCAL on the court, yeah that’s #THRO WBA CK
Azlyn Zellar-5’4 PG (Hereford)
Zellar showed she had good court vision in the Skills and Drills yet she took it up a notch during the games. The game has and always will start at the 1, she’s heady, controls tempo, and even created contact as she attacked off the dribble
Haylee Taylor-6’5 (Beaver)
Taylor has made a tremendous jump from my initial sighting a few months ago and her upside is unlimited, yes she’s 6’5. I can only envision the numerous self-promoters that will be coming at her yet I see the development where she is, I also see the upside, yes I’m clairvoyant
2029
Eliza Morris-5’2 G (Bonhmam)
Morris is fearless and pressure is irrelevant but what she also showed was not only does she want it in the clutch, she can deliver. At this stage, that’s huge and the tenacity she shows on both ends spoke volumes as she backs down from no one, huge upside
