Continue ReadingThe We Really Are Next Fall League generated quite a buzz this season. The talent was there even though it was off the radar of most of the DMV. Middle School ball is good to watch sometimes as you see players actually having fun and making friends. Another good thing about the youngsters is that they get injured differently, the fall cry like it’s the end of the world and get up and are fine, in high school falls can lead to surgeries. There was a lot to see talentwise for the future and here are 12 that really stood out.
McKenzie Jackson McKenzie Jackson 5'10" | SG Charter School | 2027 MD – Combo Wing – Riverdale Baptist School – 2027
McKenzie did whatever she wanted against whoever she wanted whenever she wanted. She got to the basket at will and showed range at the perimeter. She was clearly the best player in the building as the Crusaders fell short in the championship game.
Brooklyn Stewart – Combo Guard – Glen Arm Gladiators – 2027
Midway through the game Brooklyn’s coach told her to “make these people put respect on your name”. Something click and Brooklyn was…. Brooklyn. The player we seen all fall dominating team after team was back. She singlehandedly took her team from a 4 point deficit to a 4 point lead in four possessions. This is on player coaches should be on top of right now.
De’ja Harry – Point Guard – Glen Arm Gladiators – 2027
De’ja is pure speed and she used it to whip through traps and push the ball before the defense could set their press up. One on one she was able to beat her defender and she made plays for her teammates.
Erykah Poole – Guard – Tru 2 Form – 2028
Tru 2 Form had their hands full trying to contain the Gladiators in their game. Erykah, however, was a bright spot showing the ability to compete against some of the best in her class. She didn’t quit even though the game was out of hand early.
Aaliyah Harris Aaliyah Harris 5'7" | PG Riverdale Baptist | 2027 State MD – Wing – Riverdale Baptist School – 2027
Aaliyah is a good finisher. She ran the floor well with and without the ball. She attacks at full speed making it difficult for help defenders to cut her off in time.
Mya Pelt Mya Pelt 5'5" | CG Riverdale Baptist | 2027 State MD – Guard – Riverdale Baptist School – 2027
Mya had good drives and finishes. She used her body well and was able to complete plays even after a lot of contact. She has a high school frame and with her physicality she should be able to step up to the next level flawlessly.
Camryn Carrington Camryn Carrington 5'11" | PF MD – Wing – Glen Arm Gladiators -2027
Camryn has all of the technique in place to excel at multiple positions. She boxes out and rebounds well like a post, she hits the 3 like a wing and brings the ball up the floor like a guard. I really couldn’t lock her in a position nor should she be. She scored four baskets in a row with the fourth being a three to break their game open then played up in the next game.
Doriyan Silver – Wing – Team Melo – 2030
High school coaches on the sidelines were excited about Doriyan’s potential and was one of the players I was asked to keep an eye on when entering the gym. She has the length and athleticism to be a star if she continues to develop. She stands out in her class but will need to stay on top of her game as other players grow.
Chisara Ezeocha – Point Guard – Glen Arm Gladiators – 2030
With the game on the line Chisara had back to back three point plays the hit a 3-pointer. She handled the ball really well for her age and shot the ball as well as many high schoolers.
Sophie French – Point Guard – Glen Arm Gladiators – 2029
Sophie is a baller that remained unrattled under pressure. She has a nice handle and shot and is a true floor general. Her IQ is above grade level.
Kennedy Harrison – Guard – DMV Hoops Academy – 2029
Kennedy has skill and it was obvious that she was one of the top players on the court despite the lost. Some of her moves were of the high level variety that you typically don’t see from players her age. As she gets stronger physically we should be hearing a lot more from her.
Zaila Griffin – Post – Glen Arm Gladiators – 2028
I would like to see Zaila in a high school open gym soon. Her physical presence is unfair for middle school and it’s looks hard for her to get challenged. She did challenge herself by shooting the jumper which has a nice looking form by the way. She is on pace to be a premier high school post player in the DMV.
