As we approach the midpoint of the 2022-2023 high school season, I wanted to take the time to highlight some of the better conferences in the state. I’ll take a quick look at the teams at the top, statistical leaders, players on the rise, a top Freshman, plus an under-the-radar recruit. In order to select which conferences get the first glance, I’ve taken the Sagarin ratings (as of 12/4/22) of each team in each conference and averaged them out to give each conference a “score”, if you will. As for individual statistical leaders, I am working off of whatever has currently been provided on MaxPreps. If your team’s stats on MaxPreps are incomplete, I apologize, but please ask your coach to put them there if you would like to be considered for stat-based portions in the future.
Hoosier Crossroads Team Standings:
Hamilton Southeastern (9-0 overall, 3-0 HCC)
Zionsville Community (8-0, 2-0)
Noblesville (7-2, 2-1)
Fishers (8-2, 1-1)
Brownsburg (5-5, 1-2)
Westfield (5-3, 0-1)
Avon (5-3, 0-2)
Franklin Central (2-7, 0-2)
Hamilton Southeastern and Zionsville remain undefeated in conference play, but they don’t play each other until the end of the season, January 20th, at Zionsville. Hamilton Southeastern handed Noblesville its only conference loss, while Zionsville did the same to Fishers just a couple of weeks ago. With plenty of action still remaining, I would consider the top four teams listed as favorites to win the Hoosier Crossroads Conference, and they should trade wins/losses throughout the remainder of the season. However, all eight teams in this conference can beat anyone else at any point in the season.

, 2024, 5-7 G/W, Zionsville Community H.S.
– Emma has started her Junior year very strong, and a big reason for her hot start is her shooting. She is knocking down field goals at a 45% rate (up 8% from last season), she is shooting a scalding 46% (21-46) from 3-point range, and she’s a near-perfect 17-20 (85%) so far from the charity stripe. She is averaging 13.3 points per game, with a high of 23 points against Carmel, while her only single-digit game was a solid eight points in a 56-41 win against Bedford North Lawrence. She has always played with one of the state’s best motors, and she is an incredibly tough kid willing to take contact or get on the floor. She has put in the work, and it is showing mightily this year.

, 2023, 5-4 PG, Avon H.S.
– Nyla is an extremely athletic and tough-nosed guard. Like most of the Avon guards, she is shorter in stature, but she is very strong for her size, she has speed, quickness, and an explosive first step, and she is an absolute playmaker at both ends of the floor. Defensively is where she probably shines most, as she can defend the ball 84-feet, she can disrupt her matchup’s rhythm, and she gets her share of deflections/steals. Offensively, she is great off the bounce, she can attack, change directions, and finish in a variety of ways. She’s also 7-15 (47%) from 3-point range and 73% from the free throw line, while averaging 10.8 points, 2.3 assists, and 2.1 steals per game so far.

– After watching “K.K.” a number of times this Summer and Fall, I am not at all surprised with the immediate impact she is having for the Royals. She is extremely long, she looks like she will still grow another couple of inches, plus she has North/South speed, shiftiness, and she is highly skilled. Defensively, she can take on all types of guards, she uses her athleticism well, along with her length, and she can cause problems for her matchup. Offensively, she has a nice handle, she can find open teammates with her advanced vision, and she is capable of knocking down the open jumper. Off the bench, “K.K.” is averaging 7.3 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 2.0 assists per game.
