As we approach the holiday break of the 2022-2023 high school season, I wanted to continue taking the time to highlight some of the better conferences in the state. I'll take a quick look at the teams at the top, statistical leaders, players on the rise, a top Freshman, plus an under-the-radar recruit. In order to select which conferences get the first glance, I've taken the Sagarin ratings (as of 12/4/22) of each team in each conference and averaged them out to give each conference a "score", if you will. As for individual statistical leaders, I am working off of whatever has currently been provided on MaxPreps. If your team's stats on MaxPreps are incomplete, I apologize, but please ask your coach to put them there if you would like to be considered for stat-based portions in the future.

The SAC is always a strong conference in girls' basketball, and this year is no different. Homestead sits atop the conference standings right now with their five wins, but they still have a January 27th date with Northrop that could determine who the regular season champion is. Northrop is thriving with their new additions, but the second half of their schedule will really test their mettle, with additional matchups scheduled against Northridge, Snider, South Bend Washington, and Columbia City. After a 2-3 start, Snider has won nine in a row and seems to be rolling. They will play Northrop January 6th and Homestead January 13th in two big conference matchups. Carroll could be the sleeper here. They've already faced Northrop and Homestead, so if those teams at the top beat each other up and finish with a couple of losses as well, the Lady Chargers could be back in the mix. They host Snider on January 27th. The conference is not even close to being decided, and there are definitely some high-quality teams competing for the crown.

On The Rise: Kaleah Williams, 2025, 5-7 G, Fort Wayne North Side H.S.
- Kaleah is off to a hot start for the Lady Legends of North Side High School. After averaging just 6.5 points per game as a rookie, the long and athletic Sophomore has exploded for a 16.2 point-per-game average through nine games this season. One big reason for this outburst is the use of her defense to create offense. She is averaging an impressive 6.8 steals per game, which is undoubtedly allowing her to get out in the open floor and score the ball often in transition. As she continues to mature her game, work on her finesse, her shooting touch, and build her understanding of the nuances of the game, look for her to contribute even more efficiently in the future.

Under-The-Radar Recruit: [player_tooltip player_id='127213' first='Shabrea' last='O'Quinn'], 2023, 6-1 C, Wayne H.S.
- Shabrea entered high school with a lot of fanfare and the potential to become a really nice prospect/recruit. But after not playing during the grassroots months for two years and missing her Junior high school season, there aren't many colleges aware of her at this point in time. She is a big, powerfully strong, and extremely physical post prospect. With the time she's had away from the game, she'll need to work on rebuilding her instincts and her skillset, but she can clear space in the paint, she's a good box-out style of rebounder, and she has solid hands. As a Senior, she has helped a deep and guard-heavy Wayne team by averaging 7.3 points and 5.7 rebounds.

Impressive Freshman: [player_tooltip player_id='492319' first='Myah' last='Epps'], 2026, 5-10 W, Homestead H.S.
- Myah has been able to provide a nice, long, athletic presence to the Homestead lineup. While she has spent the last couple of Springs/Summers impressing the grassroots world, now she is showing it against a tough schedule at the high school level. What makes her intriguing is her balanced skillset and ability to play multiple positions. She can handle the ball and act as a point forward type. She has some touch outside, she can attack the basket and finish, or she can score it from the mid-post as well. Additionally, she's a willing rebounder and a versatile defender. She has already earned a handful of Division-I offers, and she has several more schools very interested in her.
