My exact words were “what she does in the open court is better than some guards heading to the next level” so her being a #D1Lock didn’t take a genius like myself long, nor did her teammate, Kelly Mora Kelly Mora 6'1" | C Monterrey | 2023 State TX , who also made that initial Tip Sheet. I caught them avenging their only district loss against Lubbock Cooper and here are the standouts
Monterrey
Kelly Mora Kelly Mora 6'1" | C Monterrey | 2023 State TX -6’0 C/PF [2023]
Mora had a double-double yet was more than double trouble as she not only scored around the basket with ease. The Texas Tech signee handled the ball in the open court and saw the floor. Her interior defense has always been tough yet I enjoyed her stepping outside the paint and defending many times on the ball, baseline to baseline
Aaliyah Chavez Aaliyah Chavez 5'9" | PG Monterey | 2025 State TX -5’9 PG [2025]
Chavez is an “and one” waiting to happen yet her body control coupled with defying gravity on her numerous off-balance shots really had me going. The backward layups or the ones falling down were very nice yet so was her dropping the stop and “pop the 3 ball” in transition. She’s a “nightmare to defend” because she can score in every imaginable way plus she has great court vision
Ambrosia Cole Ambrosia Cole 5'5" | CG Lubbock Monterrey | 2026 State TX -5’5 CG [2026]
Cole was COLD and I hadn’t seen her in a while, so my turning in was a good thing because Ambrosia took my AMNESIA away. She’s an athletic guard with a powerful first step and not only does she elevate on her midrange jumper, but she does also the same thing attacking thew basket. Her “on the ball” defense was nice, love her upside
Ari Johnson Ari Johnson 6'3" | PF Lubbock Monterrey | 2026 State TX -6’3 P [2026]
Johnson has what I call a “scary upside” because watching her at 6’3 and handling the ball fluidly after rebounding to go “coast to coast” will have college coaches from coast to coast on her. She’s long and athletic, that’s the base, but she also rebounded strongly, on both ends and scored on putbacks, after contact
Lubbock Cooper
Calyn Davis Calyn Davis 6'0" | SG Lubbock Christian | 2023 State TX -6’1 SG [2023]
Davis has always impressed me with her ability to not only create her shot but knock it down, mid to long-range. The Utah Tech signee showed that “magical” catch-and-shoot that I love to see yet her release when dropping the long ball has always been nice, especially since she does it with a hand in her face
Peyton North [2023]
North went both NORTH and SOUTH quite a bit and her handling the ball under pressure, both in the open court as well as the set was nice, and so was her body control while attacking the basket
Carissa Cortez [2024]
Cortez showed a deceptive first step which enabled her to get b the defender numerous times. She has the good body control and showed she could get her shot off after contact. Her defense was also solid
Majik Esquivel-5’8 SG [2024]
Esquivel helped change the momentum early with her “catch and shoot” from distance. She set the defender up nicely to drop the long ball, she also showed she could hit the 3 using the”step back”
