The #6 River Valley Wolverines lost a tight battle against #3 West Monona high school on Friday night by a final score of 69-53. The Wolverines were led by senior Maddie Thomas in almost all positive categories. Thomas, a 5’7 combo guard, scored a game high 22 points on 9/20 shooting from the floor while also fielding 12 rebounds, 5 being offensive. This season she has been consistent from the field and has been a great asset rebounding the ball as well as getting a good amount of assists throughout a game. Giving her teammates good opportunities to have a second shot at an offensive bucket or the ability to leak out and push the ball down the floor in transition. The Wolverines will have a challenging road ahead but could come out on top of some big ones down the stretch. Their offense is basically ran through Thomas but they do a good job of sharing the basketball and getting the best shot available during their possessions when worst comes to worst. I’ll be looking for Thomas to keep leading the way, seeing how far she can take this group before the year is over.
Sydney Doeschot Sydney Doeschot 5’8″ | PG Kingsley-Pierson | 2026 State IA came up big in vital win once again for #2 Kingsley-Pierson high school on Friday night in a big 54-31 final over #7 OABCIG. Doeschot recorded a game high 16 points on 6/15 shooting, 4 rebounds, and 5 steals. Each of these stats came in crucial in this victory as it’s never an easy task to beat a top 10 ranked team at any level. She did a good job of attacking the hoop in a multitude of ways while looking for her open teammates. Toward the future I would love to see this KP group make it to the state playoff where we can really see what Doeschot can do on a big stage. She has shown out as pivotal play-maker for her team this year night in and out on the way to an overall 13-4 record. She has been one of the best freshman thus far this season in the state and will finish the year the same way. She knows how to keep things simple and take what the defense is giving her, showing that once again on Friday evening.
Highlights
Halle Vice Halle Vice 5’11” | SG Pleasant Valley | 2023 State IA put on a show Friday night in Pleasant Valleys big 80-9 win over Davenport West on the road. Vice finished the game with 26 points, going 9/9 from the field including 3/3 from behind the three point line and 5/8 from the free throw stripe. Not much more can be said about Vice that I haven’t already mentioned. She is a play-maker, game changer, program defining talent who will finish out this year as one of the best forward in the state while moving on to play for Marquette University next season. Before that happens though she is going to look to push this squad one last time into the playoffs, hoping to make it to a state championship. After seeing this team function against every type of competition I do believing they will make it to the state playoff, barring the matchup they receive in their regional. They attack with a balance from all positions and they aren’t selfish. They have star power at both guard and big spots on the floor and don’t rush much of anything. When you combined all this, as long as they can limit their opponents offense than they will have a shot at it in the long run.
Kierra Jungers Kierra Jungers 5’10” | PF Newell-Fonda | 2024 State IA kept an amazing season going for Newell-Fonda high school on Friday, while scoring a game high 16 points in a 70-43 win over South Central Calhoun high school. Jungers is just one of many pieces that this Mustangs group has to attack you. They play with aggression but in a strategic way that you don’t see too often at the high school level. It is pretty impressive to witness. Jungers has been consistent thus far this season and is hoping to keep that up to finish things out for her junior year. Usually leading the pack for this group this year is a mixture of the upperclass with it featuring Jungers, McKenna Sievers McKenna Sievers 5’4″ | SG Newell-Fonda | 2024 State IA and Mary Walker Mary Walker 5’6″ | SG Newell-Fonda | 2023 State IA . With Sievers only being a junior along with Jungers you could say that this squad is going to be seen as a dangerous team with a chance at the state championship a few times over the next handful of seasons. Something that will be fun to watch.
