Continue ReadingCamas versus Union was such a fun game to watch. It was filled with high-level players making big-time plays. Camas came out with the first punch, and it started on the defensive end. They executed their defensive plan to a tee in the first quarter. On the ball and help-side defenders were both engaged and locked in. They drew a charge, got a steal from trapping a ball screen, and the energy was high. This trend continued for much of the first half, and Camas took a commanding lead into halftime. The second half is where the real fun began. Union came out gun-slinging in the third quarter. They hit eight threes in the quarter to bring them within seven points heading into the 4th. The valiant effort fell short as the poised Camas squad withstood every second-half run from Union to hold on for the win.
Here are some players that stood out to me in the game.

Keirra Thompson

5’7 PG, Camas:
Thompson is what you want in a floor general. She has a high IQ, stays poised under pressure, and takes care of the ball. I was impressed with her passing ability and pick-and-roll play. She had multiple no-look dimes to cutting teammates, and in the pick-and-roll, she probed the lane and made the right read almost every possession. A solid PG is always in demand at the next level. Thompson is definitely a prospect to keep an eye on in the 2025 class.

5’8 PG, Union:
Haywood was the most talented player on the floor. She is super skilled for her age and has a large set of tools in her bag to get a bucket. Camas had her clamped up in the first half. The response she came out with in the second half showed poise, confidence, and maturity. You rarely see that in freshmen. She had four 3s in the third quarter and two in the fourth. She had pull-up middys and some dimes, too. Her ceiling is very high, and I am excited to watch her story develop.

6’3 F, Camas:
Harris was the best player on the floor. Her impact on both ends is fun to watch. Her size and skill make her tough to handle on offense and oftentimes made her a mismatch problem for every Union defender. In the post, she played with her back to the basket and out of face-up. She was relentless on the glass and rebounded outside of her area. She finished with both hands at the rim through and around contact, too. Right now, Addison’s most transferrable skill to the next level to me is her defense. She guarded the best player who happened to be the PG. That shows her defensive versatility by being able to guard 1-4. College coaches will be locked in on her for sure this summer.
2024 Parker Mairs 5’8 SG, Camas:
I liked the energy Parker played with. She showed a solid handle and ability to get paint touches. She has a quick first step and can finish with either hand at the rim. Parker is an active defender and got a lot of deflections this game.

Ava Smith

5’8 SG, Union:
Whoever ends up signing Smith isn’t just getting a shooter. She is developing into a well-rounded scorer. She is starting to become just as dangerous off the dribble as she is as a shooter. On one possession she drove by her defender with a hesitation and finished with a left leg-left-hand runner off the glass; it was very tough. She also made good drive-and-kick reads. Overall, Smith didn’t have the best shooting night from deep, but the few she hit were high-level– one was close to the volleyball line, and one was off a dribble handoff. Both are in demand at the next level.
2024 Rowyn Riley 5’5 PG, Union:
I loved her confidence. Riley was in attack mode all game. She made some mistakes, and had an off shooting night, but she was aggressive to make things happen. That’s the energy and confidence you want your players to have. She showed a solid handle and ability to get downhill. Her shot from 3 didn’t look bad either.
