These are going to be the two thoughts you’ll have when you hear about the performance Stella Charleston Stella Charleston 5’8″ | SG Southeast Polk | 2023 State IA put on for Southeast Polk earlier on this week. Charleston registered a school record of 11 made three pointers in their contest against Urbandale high school on Tuesday evening. She ended up with a game high 33 points on 11/22 shooting and ending up in the history books in a few places because of it. As I mentioned before, this broke the Southeast Polk high school record for the most three pointers made in a game, which happened to be held by Charleston with 10. It also places her at third for the most three pointers made in a single game in Iowa women’s high school basketball history. Moving forward I would suggest that any team matching up against this squad here on out or into the playoffs run a defense that denies the shooting of the three ball by the Rams. They are a team that thrives against zones and can put up some big numbers from distance if you let them. Looking toward the future I anticipate Charleston to finish out her high school career on a strong note and become an instant impact at the next level as she is committed to play at Dordt University, a big time pick up for The Defenders. Tonight the Rams will face off against the red-hot Dowling Catholic Maroons on the road. If Stella can keep up the long range accuracy and her teammates do their jobs, it should be a good one.
“Addison Klosterbuer for three!” That is something that Boyden-Hull high school was tired of hearing by the end of their contest against Central Lyon on Tuesday night. Klosterbuer, the University of South Dakota women’s basketball commit and knock down shooter, scored a game high 38 points on 14/20 shooting while going 9/12 from behind the three point line. This is an impressive performance that needs to be talked about but Klosterbuer has been such a good shooter and play-maker this season that it seems like a normal stat line. Kinda of a crazy thing to think about. Friday evening they will suit up and go on the road for their next contest when they take on West Lyon. A #2 VS #15 matchup. I expect Addison to do her thing and make it rain from all over the court. I’m excited to see what she does when her team gets to the bigger stages of the playoffs and state tournament. She is a fantastic overall player, a great shooter, and a nice teammates to have on your side in a game. Her shooting ability is easy to see from just watching her play in one game and I think that is something that is going to stay constant over her career.
Kelsey Joens Kelsey Joens 5’10” | SG West Liberty | 2023 State IA and the #13 West Liberty Comets got their 10th win of the season on Tuesday night over West Branch high school behind a complete performance of Joens. She ended with an impressive triple double but not in the normal fashion as you would normally think. She recorded 27 points, 10 rebounds, 10 steals, and 7 assists. Maybe putting together one of the more impressive stat lines of the season by any player all together. This team has some really good pieces to make some big noise once the playoffs start. As long as they get placed in a spot where they don’t have to play a top 3 team in the state then I think they will have a really good shot to make it to the state tournament but who knows as anything can happen and the competition throughout the 2A class in really competitive all around. After the tournament I can’t wait for Joens to get to Iowa State where she will be paired up with the top player in Iowa in the 2023 class in Audi Crooks Audi Crooks 6’3″ | C Bishop Garrigan | 2023 State #42 Nation IA . When taking a look at all the talent that the Cyclones are going to be getting just out of Iowa over the next few seasons you can tell that they are going to be relevant for a good amount of time in college basketball and that is exciting to see.
Madison Hillman Madison Hillman 6’1″ | PF Saint Ansgar | 2023 State IA registered a stat in almost every positive category on Tuesday night in her teams 59-21 win over Nashua-Plainfeild high school. Hillman recorded a game high 19 points on 9/13 shooting, 11 rebounds, 3 assists, 5 blocks, 5 steals. When we break it down into simpler terms, this performance almost outscored the opposing team by itself. Something that definitely should be talked about. Hillman has been really consistent this year when it comes to her stat lines and how her game has been played. She hasn’t tried to do to much while sharing the ball and thus far its been going good as they currently have a 10-5 record with some quality wins under their belt. This is a group that does have a main option in Hillman but tends to play team basketball. They have a balanced attack and do a good job of spreading the ball around. No one in this group has ever stood out as selfish as they are always wanting to make the extra pass, for an easy basket. This strategy will tend to play into their favor once the playoffs start. It is always tougher to stop a group working together on the court than one individual player in most cases. I think this group can come out and shock some teams once the post season begins if they keep up all the little things that they are doing as a program thus far with Hillman leading from the front.
