Continue ReadingIt was a matchup between #1 seed South Meck vs #2 seed Myers Park. South Meck won the conference in the regular season with a tremendous game against Myers Park to end the season. The Sabres were able to come out on top again to win the SoMeck 4A Conference Tournament Championship. Here are some of the standouts from the game.
Maggie Houpt was certainly my pick for the player of the game. She came right out showing off her nice shot scoring first for the Sabres. She hit four three pointers in the first half including one through contact making it a four point play. She didn’t stop there hitting two more in the second half right when her team needed them most, and these were all contested three pointers. It’s fitting that she sunk the final free throws to end the game and seal the victory. She had a quick close out guarding an opponent around the perimeter blocking her shot.
Betsey Burnett was awarded the Conference Tournament Most Valuable Player award. She used her shot fakes to get around her opponents and pull up for a midrange jumper scoring even with hands in her face. She knows how to take advantage of her defender pulling up half a step blowing by them for two at the rim. She made sure to show off her stroke from deep even knocking down a tough one in transition.
Anastasia Sinclair came right out grabbing steals like her usual M.O. She pushed it up the court finding her open teammate for a transition three pointer. She is aggressive attacking the basket making points herself or dishing it to her teammates. She does it all getting inside for rebounds going up high to grab them no matter who is around her. Her crossover continues to be efficient getting her opponents off their stance and creates an opening for her to score.
Gabrielle Troy-Mebane got in on the shooting action from deep. What really stood out to me, though was her defense. She’s a tough defender being able to guard any ball handler she is assigned to. Her defense was crucial late in the fourth quarter grabbing a steal after a timeout deflating her opponents’ hopes.
Now, let’s see the stars for the Myers Park Mustangs.
Jerin Truesdale hit her shot from deep, and she will go up against anyone driving to the hoop. She is great when it comes to taking over for her team finding ways to get some points on the board whether she is attacking the basket herself, or she is at the elbow finding her open teammates on the block. She seals off her opponents to make sure she can get the pass and bucket. She took over in the second half scoring back to back buckets leading a run for her team to take the lead.
Chayla McDaniel doesn’t give up on a play, and she uses a nice shot fake to get around her opponents on her drives off offensive rebounds. Right when her team needed a bucket the most, she took a rebound coast to coast scoring two on a fast break. She had some tough drives to the hoop showing off some nice spin moves to score.
Kamora Cannie is aggressive handing the ball attacking the basket. She makes sure she gets points even if she has to make them from the free throw line as contact does not deter her. She can knock down her shot from deep finding the opening even hitting them in transition.
