HM: I watched a lot of South Lakes Forward Jessica Dornak Jessica Dornak 6’1″ | PF South Lakes | 2023 State VA this year, and I’ve been highly impressed. She was her team’s best offensive player by far all year and was a consistently high-level contributor. She is very skilled for her size and has phenomenal touch.
Highlights
HM: Elena Bertrand Elena Bertrand 5’5″ | PG Virginia Academy | 2023 State VA was difficult for me to leave off this list. She is a great ball-handler and a good decision-maker. She is quick and good around the rim. Elena was a fun watch all season and one of the best guards in NOVA.
Highlights
Joi Williams Joi Williams 5’7″ | PG Virginia Academy | 2023 State VA is one-half of one of the best backcourts in Virginia. Joi can score at a high level and is averaging almost 20 PPG this year. She plays the game with intensity coaches love, and her skill matches that. Virginia Academy is an entertaining team to watch, and for a team that is ranked number 3 in the state, they don’t get the credit. Joi Williams Joi Williams 5’7″ | PG Virginia Academy | 2023 State VA is the biggest reason they are a fantastic offensive squad.
For the other guard position, I will go with Grace Middleton Grace Middleton 5’6″ | SG Tuscarora | 2023 State VA . Grace averaged 19.8 PPG, 3.6 SPG, 6 RPG, and 2.8 APG heading into regionals. She was named first-team all-district and was named Dulles district player of the year. All year Grace showed her defensive ability and complete offensive game. She’s an excellent spot-up shooter and can play both guard positions.
The Robinson Rams lost two games this year, and Caroline Shimp Caroline Shimp 5’11” | SF Robinson | 2023 State VA significantly influenced that. Like most of this Robinson team, Shimp is a good defender and uses her length to affect passing lanes. Shimp was named to the Patriot district’s first team.
If I had to name my favorite player I’ve watched this season, it would be Louis Volker Louis Volker 6’0″ | SF Paul VI | 2023 State VA . Louis makes the game look easy. She can score inside from the post, face up other bigs and shoot over them or drive by them, or step out and drain 3s. She is a fantastic rebounder and an underrated passer. Louis was arguably the best senior in NOVA this year and PVIs best player.
Autumn Fairfax Autumn Fairfax 6’3″ | C Culpeper County HS | 2023 State VA has flown under the radar this year, and I’m trying to figure out why. Culpepper technically doesn’t count as NOVA, but it’s close enough to where I would be nitpicking not to include Autumn here. Culpepper is 19-6, and Autumn is their best player, and she hasn’t been talked about that much. She’s averaging 23.3 PPG, and she’s been a beast inside all season.
