For 1A, the Eastern Regional saw a matchup between Falls Lake and Chatham Charter. In the Western Regional, Bishop McGuinness took on Robbinsville. Bishop McGuinness will be returning to the state championship in back to back seasons defending their title against Chatham Charter. Let’s take a look at the standouts from each matchup.
We are starting with the Western Regional Championship.
Desta Trammell always does a nice job of putting her head down and barreling through opponents on her way to some points at the rim. She finishes from the free throw line when she has to battle through contact. She is shifty handling the ball being able to lose her defender with her hesitation moves and crossover dribbles. She was a true floor general for her team directing them on where to go and how to get an offensive play moving.
Adelaide Jernigan, to no one’s surprised, got the scoring started in the game knocking down her shot from deep. Some of her passes were across the court but incredibly accurate threading the needle to get to the intended target. On defense, she seemed to be in the way quite a bit using her length to deflect passes and inhibit her opponents from moving the ball.
Tate Chappell was all over the court handling the ball, obtaining loose possessions, and getting inside for rebounds. She was tough on defense being aggressive knocking the ball away from her opponents. She showed off her range shooting the ball, too, even making a nice four point play in the first half.
Kiersten Varner
Kiersten Varner
Kiersten Varner was doing a nice job flashing in and out of the paint shifting the zone defense being able to find her open teammates around the perimeter. She used open lanes to attack the basket finishing at the rim for two points. Her cuts in and out of the paint also led to her getting fouled when she had the ball and converted from the free throw line. Her shot fake was nice to step around her defender and pull up for the jumper.
Now, let’s go to the East.
Emerson Thompson is the main ball handler, and the offense certainly runs through her. She penetrates the paint drawing opponents towards her as she creates scoring opportunities for her teammates. She uses every bit of her length to stop her opponents from getting by her at the top of the key. She moves well even without the ball being able to find the openings to catch a pass and knock down her shot around the perimeter.
Ashbee Standridge
Ashbee Standridge
Ashbee Standridge did a nice job being patient sliding into the openings staying ready for the ball. She pulled up for her jumper from the free throw line with ease using ball fakes to create some space. She sees the floor well getting the ball on the free throw line looking for her open teammates underneath the basket or around the perimeter. She used this vision on defense, too, jumping in front of passes to grab the steal.
Delana Loflin
Delana Loflin
Delana Loflin was effective in many areas of the court getting inside for rebounds, pushing the ball up the court on fast breaks, and causing deflections on defense. She stripped the ball from her opponents to take the other direction. She knew when to attack the lanes even drawing fouls for her to get some chances at the free throw line.
Tamaya Walden
Tamaya Walden
Tamaya Walden was driving hard to the hoop making the smart dish to her teammates. There’s certainly a reason her opponents defended her full court trying to slow her down from handling the rock. The tempo was controlled by her as she would have a quick release scoring on a fast break. She had some nice crossover moves pulling up for a floater in the paint for two points.
Meah Brooks
Meah Brooks
Meah Brooks was a dominant presence in the paint using her post moves to score some points. She showed how she can pull up for jumpers or attack the basket driving it in for two. She handled the ball well even pushing the tempo finding her open teammate up the court for transition offense.
