While I was covering the 17U division, I noticed that every single team had at least one player who could light it up from 3. What I also noticed about these shooters was their ability to score inside of the perimeter as well, so maybe I should’ve named this article top scorers rather than top shooters. Regardless, here are some of the players that caught my attention with their shooting and scoring abilities. (Please note: this does not include any players that have been featured in the other articles from this event)
Rhodes is an excellent scorer. Automatic from deep but can hit from anywhere on the court. Always feel like her shots going to fall when she shoots it. Wasn’t forcing anything and was making really good decisions with the ball. Made great drives and threw some great passes. Just really solid and should pick up D1 offers this summer.
Highlights
Ella Webster
Ella Webster
Webster’s skillset is solid. She can handle the ball well and is a sniper from long range. However, she contributes a lot more than just knocking down shots. Always in the right position and just a smart player overall. Made good decisions with the ball and was constantly moving to the openings on the floor when she didn’t have the ball. Defensively, always ready to step over and help.
Spieker’s got a high basketball IQ and is always thinking a play ahead. She gets herself into the gaps to knock down shots and she has very deep range on her shot. She also makes strong cuts and sees the floor. Because of her ability to knock down shots at a high percentage, also does a great job of using shot fakes and making strong drives to the hoop. Makes solid passes and just keeps adding more to her overall game.
Instantly caught my eye by her ability to knock down shots, but when you really watch all that Preston brings to the floor, you’ll be really impressed. Just does all of the little things that sometimes go unnoticed along with making the noticeable impact that she does for her team. Crashes the boards strong, plays great defense, and can score in a variety of ways.
Gwen Higdon
Gwen Higdon
Higdon had one of the most smooth jumpers. The lefty can really shoot the ball well and she can knock down shots from anywhere on the floor. Catches ready to pull and has a quick release. Can score off the dribble or catch and also showed an ability to score off of floaters, layups, etc.
Debated putting Whited in this particular article because her shooting was just one of the many areas of her game that stood out over the weekend. She’s really an excellent playmaker who can score the ball in many ways. Terrific ball handler. Can handle pressure and double teams really well. Sees the floor and makes good passes. Always looking to create by driving the gaps and/or drawing help defense. Can score at all 3 levels and has a great outside shot.
