Continue ReadingWith another end to a summer ball season having arrived I present to you my all-Kansas Summer Ball 2023 Team. Part 1 of the team dropped yesterday. It is composed only of players that I saw play live. Growing a couple over last year to 18 players this team of mine requires to separate articles to give all included the space they need. My stops to see action in person included the MAYB Hall of Fame Exposure and Summer Kickoff events Wichita, the Hutchinson Community College team camp, and the three wildly successful Prep Girls Hoops Circuit events in Kansas City, MO, and Wichita. A limitation on inclusiveness of players and clubs is readily apparent. More than even last summer many clubs and players chose to compete primarily outside the state. Some did compete in state but I did not happen to be where they were playing. Other players did attend events where I was but unfortunately I did not get as quality look at them as I would have liked. Part 1 was composed of point and shooting guards. This part 2 is composed of combo guards/wings/small forwards through power forwards and centers.
Combo Guards & Wings
Hattie Gros Hattie Gros 5'8" | CG Frankfort | 2024 State KS , 5’8″, Frankfort, SSA – Catching Gros at April’s MAYB Hall of Fame Exposure event I really enjoyed watching more of what I have become familiar with over the years, hustle; defensive quickness and disruptiveness; rebounding; and a general ability to make plays. An athletic finisher who gets a step quickly.
Maci McClure Maci McClure 5'7" | PG Minneapolis | 2025 State KS , 5’7″, CG, Minneapolis, Thunderbolts – McClure left a big impression on me when I saw her early this summer. Fast, strong, and quick with the ball McClure can really embarrass defenders who are not sharp on their close-out and defend technique. She will explode right by them. She also moves well into space and will knock down the open perimeter shot, making her that much more difficult to defend.
Aaliyah Moss Aaliyah Moss 5'10" | CG Gardner Edgerton | 2024 State KS , 5’10”, SF, Gardner-Edgerton, KC Eclipse – The End Game notes – Coach afterward said she played with painful jammed fingers. Creates well, including her own shot, from the wing but must get physically stronger. Has scoring ability, like dominant type, but does not look to score as frequently as she should. Needs to sit down defensively.
Madison Smith Madison Smith 5'9" | CG Derby | 2024 State KS , 5’9″, Derby, Kansas Bluejays – Over the years I have seen Smith play in club, high school, and exposure event environments and saw her several times over the summer. Not one to let pain and injuries drag her down, what is always present is effort, What pain can do is affect technique on both ends of the floor and her past, strong training shines through because she always shoots well with her feet under her, always transitions with speed, and always shows great technique closing out and staying with attackers. What cannot be taught is wingspan and she uses it to great affect defensively and on athletic scoring attempts near the basket. A starter on the Panther 6A third place team a season ago, she has had a great summer.
Katherine Weiss Katherine Weiss 5'7" | CG Sacred Heart | 2024 State KS , 5’7″, Sacred Heart, Thunderbolts – A walking three point play Weiss shows quickness on both ends of the floor and attacks the basket with strength. Her consistency as a three point threat makes her off-the-bounce abilities that much more dangerous. Unselfish and a solid defender.
Power Forwards & Centers
Maja Komaszynska Maja Komaszynska 6'1" | PF Life Prep | 2024 State KS , 6’1″, PF, Life Prep – Probably the least known top post player in the state Komaszynska may find her way to a mid-major Division I. A confident and diversely skilled post with good size and length, what especially stands out is her leadership on the floor. She can play the point forward role working high in the half court and direct traffic from mid-range areas around the key. She scores well with either hand and is a solid shooter from range and the middle areas. Defensively, she stays down and walls up well. She also controls rebounds and can go end-to-end when she reads it to be open.
Jalyiah Manual Jalyiah Manual 6'0" | SF East | 2024 State KS , 6’1″, C, Wichita East, B2B Kansas Bluejays – Despite a rocky start to the summer in terms of club team commitment and fairly bizarre injury instances Manual has emerged as arguably the top center in the Wichita area. Every time I saw her she showed me something new. With great size and length Manuel has good speed and really terrific quicks on both ends of the floor. Very confident in her athleticism and scoring ability Manuel became much more selfless by summer’s end….which made her a far better player. She showed the ability to lead the break and find the open spot up shooter. She also grew in interior passing as well as passing out and resetting ability. I have watched her for years and one other thing she possesses is great hands. I would not be surprised to see her average 15 and 15 this fall with a couple blocks and assists.
Alana Shetlar Alana Shetlar 6'1" | PF Andover | 2024 State KS , 6’2″, PF, Andover, Kansas United – Shetlar has had a strong summer, playing well from the start. At the MAYB Hall of Fame Exposure event she was one of her team’s top players game-in, game-out. A terrific mid-range shooter who not just can shoot the three but will attack defenders off the bounce from the wing strong finishing ability. Her strength substantially improved over 2022. Observers agreed with me that her upper body size had clearly increased. She holds a handful of Division I and II offers.
Jaden Wilson Jaden Wilson 5'11" | PF Derby | 2024 State KS , 5’10”, PF, Derby, Gameball Fusion – There was not a player on the floor that Wilson would not go toe-to-toe with. She defends and rebounds with physicality and persistence, uses her strong frame with solid handles to beat people along the baseline and out of the short corner, and uses her post game to create shots she can finish with either hand. Wilson can also run and has good quickness on both ends.
