Continue ReadingAnother end to a summer ball season has arrived. I now get to present my all-Kansas Summer Ball 2025 Team. It is composed only of players that I saw play live. I saw a bunch of strong point guards this summer and the many represented here cause me to break the team up into a set of two articles. My stops to see action in person included the MAYB Hall of Fame Exposure and Summer Kickoff events, three PGH
Dynasty (KS)
Circuit events, PBR’s The End Game event, and the Fort Hays State University individual camp. A limitation on inclusiveness of players and clubs is readily apparent. Always impactful, and especially disappointing, is the number of clubs I do not get to see. Usually because the teams chose to play primarily out of state but especially frequent was clubs not being at events I was covering. There are always players attending events where I am but unfortunately I do not always get the quality look at them as I would have liked. This part 1 is composed of point and shooting guards. Part 2 will share the combo guards/small forwards and bigs.
Point Guards
KaMyra Barber KaMyra Barber 5'9" | PG Wichita Heights | 2025 State KS , 5’9″, Wichita Heights, B2B Kansas Bluejays – An unselfish, mature player Barber has had a terrific summer. The Wichita Northwest transfer can play at a variety of tempos. She can play the fast, up-and-down, push and pressure the ball game or work effectively in half court battles. A three level scorer she can pop the slick, mid-range all-netter off the catch and finish athletically off the bounce with scoopers. She is also a quality three point threat. Defensively she is just as heady. Barber earned 17U first team all-event honors at the PGH Dynasty Circuit event finals in July. Barber will be playing for her third Wichita area high school after a family move into the school boundaries.
Oen Deters Oen Deters 5'6" | SG Centralia | 2025 State KS , 5’6″, PG, Centralia, SSA – Deters has a very mature game and is a terrific shooter. She already has racked up over 800 points in her high school career. Deters has terrific handles she combines with consistently good head and shoulder fakes, a solid build, and solid transition speed. She shoots with range including off the dribble step-back. She also is a hard working defender. What I love best about her game is her unflappability under pressure and her floor leadership. Deters, who recently picked up an offer from Benedictine University, is a multiple time all-state first team selection.
SaMiyah Ellis SaMiyah Ellis 5'8" | PG Wichita Heights | 2025 State KS , 5’7″, The Independent School, B2B Kansas Bluejays – Ellis, who is likely to transfer to Wichita Heights following a family move into the school boundaries, had a statement making summer. If she does, the rest of class 2A better take a collective sigh of relief because Independent would be my favorite to win the state title. Very fast with strong, quick handles Ellis is a consistent perimeter threat who can hit the three with range. Defensively, absolutely automatic with either hand finishing off turnover whether going end-to-end on her own or off the catch.
Molly Martin Molly Martin 5'7" | CG Hays | 2025 State KS , 5’7″, Hays, SSA – I had the opportunity to catch Martin at the Fort Hays University individual camp as well as at a MAYB event. Fast and quick she makes quick, catchable passes in transition and finishes with athleticism. She shot 36% from three point land and 78% from the line last season on the way to earning second team Western Activities Conference for the second time. A well rounded scorer, her length helps her to also a be a very solid defender as well.
Shooting Guards
Lillian Martin Lillian Martin 5'7" | SG Bishop Carroll | 2025 State KS , 5’7″, Bishop Carroll, Next Level Eclipse – I caught Martin at the late July The End Game in Wichita. A returning Greater Wichita Area League honorable mention selection Martin shows physical strength on both ends of the floor, good anticipation to slice through passing lanes, and transition speed on the finish. She is also a consistent perimeter threat with fluid release.
Ashley Alverson Ashley Alverson 5'7" | SG Blue Valley North | 2025 State KS , 5’6″, Blue Valley North, Kansas Eclipse – I enjoyed catching Alverson at The End Game at the end of July. I love players with good, quick footwork and Alverson showed really nice lateral quickness. With some ability to finish through contact what is her break and butter is her perimeter shooting. She also is a solid at the line.
Landry O’Brien Landry O’Brien 5'8" | SG Labette County | 2025 State KS , 5’8″, Labette County, Missouri Legacy – Numrich can play both the 1 or the 2 and is very effective lighting up in streaks from three point land. Fast with the ball in transition O’Brien is effective on the finish or finding open teammates with the dime drop or with the quick, catchable pass on the perimeter. She is heading and effective defensively as well. Transition handles are good.
