I don’t believe that Albrecht did some of the things that some who’ve played her have known her to do. For instance, she didn’t score 20 points or grab 15 rebounds in any of the games she played, and some shots weren’t falling, but I learned the most about her. The way Albrecht attacked the basket off the dribble to earn trips to the free-throw line, getting back defensively, the rebounding, rim protection, defensive versatility, and her motor made her stand out. I thought all the little things she did made her one of the best players at the event.
The future Oshkosh North Spartan was the best defensive presence at the event, and I don’t think it was that close. The way she plays, you’d think she’s an uber-athletic 6-3 wing, but then you check her listed height, and it’s 5-10. She covers an unbelievable amount of ground and can contest anything on her half of the floor. Alic has an opportunity to help her Oshkosh North program reach heights it hasn’t seen in a long time over her four years.
The calming presence Zehner brings to the lead guard spot is refreshing. She plays the game in a manner that leads to the success of the other four players on the floor. Zehner also can play an off-ball guard, which will be helpful throughout her career at Arrowhead. She’s a bit of a chameleon in that she’ll probably find a way to help her team raise their ceiling by playing any role her team needs.
If I had to guess who makes the most significant impact as a newcomer this season, Krull would be one of the names I’d consider. Like I said the other day, she’s physically ready to play 17 and 18-year-olds, but she plays so under control. I’d trust her to make things happen with the ball in her hands, and I wouldn’t be surprised if she ended up defending the opposing team’s best players when push comes to shove in April, and hopefully March for the Xavier Hawks.
EllaMay Cooper
What Cooper did in Appleton is the same thing she’s been doing for years. Controlling tempo, beating defenders off the dribble, scoring, creating, and attacking weak spots in the defense. Her quickness will give everyone headaches in the Cloverbelt and in D4 when this postseason comes around.
