As a tune up to the regular season, various schools and organizations are hosting fall leagues. These events give teams the opportunity to get game action and get a preview of how this season’s squad will look. Burroughs High School in Burbank, CA has played host to one of these fall leagues each weekend. I was able to attend the league on Saturday, Sept. 23 and here’s a look at some of the top standouts I saw.
1.
Claire Hackney

Hackney was one of those players who gradually makes an impact throughout the game. She’s unselfish, she keeps the ball moving but she knows when to take advantage of scoring opportunities. A consistent three-point shooter off the catch. Does a good job handling the ball especially in transition. Patiently navigates the defense in the halfcourt and is able to get into the paint.
2.
Lindsay Gould

Gould is kind of a forward/center depending on matchups and consistently spaces the floor with three-point shooting. Consistently knocked down the corner three off the catch. Good off ball movement; makes strong cuts and dives to the basket getting behind the defense. Able to finish strong inside.
3. Libby Oxciano – Valencia 2024
This was my first time seeing Oxciano play and she was impressive as a scoring wing. Comfortable with the ball in her hands, able to get to her spots on the court off the dribble and at ease getting her shot. Quick release on her jumper. She’s also a good playmaker, reads the defense well and is able to find the open teammate.
4.
Jeda Taylor

Taylor has good size for a wing. She can handle the ball and is not afraid of attacking the paint. She’s able to dribble to her spots on the court. Good ball-handler in transition pushing the pace. While she’s more of a forward, at times she was the primary ball-handler. Defensively, she does well on closeouts contesting jumpers.
5. Josie Regez – Canyon 2024
In the game I saw, Regez showed off both on ball and off ball scoring ability. She can handle the ball and attack the basket. She uses her body well to shield off the defender and finish at the basket. Sprints out on the break and can be a finisher off the pass. Able to shoot off the dribble and shoot from three off the catch.
