HER Skills Summit: 2027 Standouts

LOS ALAMITOS, Calif. — The 2nd annual Hoops By Ugland HER Skills Summit took place Sunday at the new Griffin Center on the campus of Los Alamitos high school. The skill development and competition-based camp drew 78 high school girls prospects from the classes of 2027-2033 and those prospects received hands' on coaching from high level high school and college coaches. Below we take a closer look at the 2027 prospects who stood out.    Washington was one of the most skilled offensive players in the camp and had her perimeter toolbox on full display. The 6-foot guard, who will play her senior season at Ontario Christian, was connecting on deep three-point shots off the catch and off the bounce and getting to the rim and to her mid-range jumper in isolation. Where Washington made her biggest impact was with her ability to rebound the defensive glass, push the break, and make high IQ decisions to create for herself and her teammates.     Hailey's best trait is her ability to knock down the catch-and-shoot three-point shot from multiple spots and ranges of the floor. The 5-foot-6 shooting guard used her threat as a perimeter shooting threat to attack aggressive closeouts and create for herself and teammates off the bounce. We noted that Louie was a high IQ defender who was always in good position in help-side situations and pressured and contained opposing ball handlers on the perimeter.     Normally players are looking to be aggressive as a scorer when it comes to showcase camps but Kiernan stayed true to her skill-set and basketball IQ as a true point guard. The 5-foot-5 senior had her eyes up the floor in transition where her vision and feel for the game took over and led to on-time and on-target passes to open teammates. In half-court offense, Kiernan was great at finding cutters and open shooters with drive-and-kick passes. When she wanted to score it was within the flow of the offense and on efficient catch-and-shoot threes.     There were few more crafty guards in the gym than Yeh who used her changes of speed and direction and elite interior footwork to get into the lane, get defenders out of position and score with touch off the glass. Yeh spun her way through the paint for scooped left-handed layups and utilized an effective shot-fake to get by her defender to score with a floater or pull-up jumper. One of the more underrated parts of her game is her ability to use her strength to post up and score over or through smaller defenders. Yeh, a natural left-hander, also showed impressive right hand finishing ability.     Emegwa was one of the surprises of the event as her smooth playmaking and scoring feel was on full display. Her wiry frame and crafty handle allowed her to get by her initial defender and get into the lane where she used the glass and angles to her advantage but also showed touch with her floater.     The key word that comes to mind when thinking of Perkins' game: Versatility. The 5-foot-10 senior has a combination of positional size, fluid athleticism and perimeter skill that allows her to be a swiss-army knife on both ends of the floor. Perkins showed off her back-to-the-basket footwork and took advantage of mismatches in the paint. She also stepped out to the perimeter and knocked down open catch-and-shoot perimeter shots. Perkins had a couple of impressive rebound and push opportunities in transition where she scored herself or created a shot for a teammate.     Walls' combination of size, strength and physicality was overwhelming for many defenders on Sunday. The 5-foot-6 guard used her physical tolls and downhill attacking ability to bully her way through defenders in transition and isolation offense where she scored in the lane on floaters and layups with efficiency. Walls was also a very good perimeter scorer off the bounce when using ball screens to generate space from defenders.     Echtenkamp was among the best shooters in the gym Sunday as her combination of textbook form, strong base and balance and repeatable shooting mechanics led to her connection on a barrage of deep jumpers throughout the day. Echtenkamp possesses good positional size, gets her shot off quickly and has consistency both off the catch and on her movement shooting. Aside from her offensive skill-set, Echtenkamp did a lot of "glue-type" work on the offensive and defensive boards and as a connector with her passing.
