Every year, there are 7th graders across the state that open a lot of eyes by making an impact at the high school level. It’s not an easy thing to do and it’s tough to predict the scope of the impact they will make until the season begins, but below you will find some players that I have been told have the potential to get Varsity minutes in their 1st high school season.
Charlotte McCurry (John Hardin)
While John Hardin returns top senior Destini McAllister, they actually only return 6 total players (including McAllister) from last year’s Varsity roster and at least half of those players are post players. Despite only being in the 7th grade, McCurry is a player that is going to be able to instantly step into the starting lineup as the starting PG. The floor general has already shown her skills on a big stage, being named a top 20 player at the Chris Paul Middle School Combine. She has excellent size for a young point guard. She attacks gaps well and recognizes the openings on the court. What makes McCurry an especially tough matchup is her ability to both score and create off the bounce. She is definitely a top 2029 player in Kentucky and I believe she will prove that on the court this season.
Ryleigh Feltner (Perry County Central)
Feltner appears to be the only 2029 player to make Perry County Central’s Varsity roster this year. The Lady Commodores return a lot of production from last season, but don’t be surprised to see Feltner making an impact early on in her HS career. She has a true scorer’s mentality and can be a huge difference maker on the court. I got the chance to watch her play this summer and she was lighting up every area of the court. Handles the ball, tough finishes at the rim, quick release on her jumpers, and recognizes where the opening are on the floor. She also does a great job creating for teammates and can make some really impressive passes which is why I included her in this PG group despite her being able to play any guard position well. Poised and ready to be one of the next stars in Kentucky.
Crista Thacker (Clinton County)
Clinton County returns their leading scorer and one of the top players in the Region in Landree Moons, but they will have spots to fill after graduating their 2nd and 3rd leading scorers from last season. Judging off of what we saw this summer, Crista Thacker will be a player that will help fill those roles. She has dominated at the middle school level and shown why she can help fill a starting guard spot at the high school level this season. I love when I can easily tell that a young player truly loves the game and I could see that instantly from Thacker. With her defense, ball handling, passing, rebounding, and scoring abilities, she can really be effective playing any guard position. She is definitely a 2029 player that I would keep an eye on this season.
Lily Bittner Lily Bittner 5'3" | PG Campbell County | 2029 KY (Campbell County)
Bittner is a very unselfish PG. Already does a great job using both sides of the court and handles the ball well. She’s always willing to make the extra pass and creates well for her teammates. She can also score the ball whether that be through drives to the hoop or knocking down outside shots. She plays fearlessly and seeing that she played up at the 2026 level in AAU ball, playing up on a HS team will be something she’s ready and prepared for.
Jaylee Vernon (Taylor County)
Taylor County is loaded with young talent and Vernon is definitely one of those talented young players. I got to watch her play this summer and was so surprised to see she was a 2029 because she was playing fearlessly and holding her own against some very skilled high school players. Further, a daughter of two coaches, she understands the work that you have to put into the game in a very special way. She is very fundamentally sound and should get good experience playing up at the high school level this season. I have no doubts that Vernon will be a fun player to watch not only this season, but for years to come.
