Lauren Bailey Lauren Bailey 5’10” | SF Creswell | 2024 State OR is one of the top defensive threats in the state. Using her long 5’10 frame, Bailey is a steal machine, averaging over 5 steals per game in the majority of the Bulldogs’ contests. This is a nice bonus considering she often leads her team in points and rebounds as well. To wrap up 2023 and start the new year, Bailey had 20 points against Glide, averaged 17 points, 12 rebounds, and 5.5 steals in the following two games, and then had 19 points, 5 rebounds, and 5 steals versus La Pine. A very talented volleyball player and just impressive athlete overall, Bailey is not someone that opposing teams like to face.
Sage Winslow Sage Winslow 5’8″ | PG Crater | 2025 State OR is another player whose game could be praised in every aspect, however, her ability to turn other teams over and create possessions for her team is particularly impressive. She must be amongst the leaders in steals in the state. Over the past few weeks, Winslow 21 points, 3 rebounds, 6 assists, and 8 steals against Marshfield; 16 points, 2 rebounds, 4 assists, and 7 steals versus Baker; and 23 points, 7 assists, and 6 steals in the win over Crescent Valley. Watching Winslow intercept a pass or strip a ball-handler and take it to the other end with her impressive speed is truly a thing of beauty. Winslow’s high level of play is a big reason why Crater is 12-1 and ranked first in the state in 5A, and she will need to keep this up as the Comets look ahead to the postseason.

Kortney Doman Kortney Doman 5’9″ | CG Crane | 2024 State OR is another example of a player that opposing offenses dread having to play against. Her long, athletic frame is a daunting presence at the top of Crane’s press. She puts up huge steal numbers while throwing in a few blocks as well. In their last three games, she had 22 points, 5 rebounds, 6 assists, 9 steals, and 2 blocks; 12 points, 5 rebounds, 7 assists, 7 steals, and 1 block; and 16 points, 9 rebounds, 4 assists, 3 steals, and 1 block. Numbers like that speak for themselves in terms of the kind of players and defender that Doman is. She has led Crane to #1 in the state in 1A and a perfect 12-0 record through her well-rounded play, and it will be a treat to continue to watch her have these kinds of performances as the season wears on.
A season ago, Samarah Massey Samarah Massey 5’10” | SF Benson | 2026 State OR was named the Defensive Player of the Year in the Portland Interscholastic League (PIL)… as a freshman. She has continued on with this excellent defensive play in her sophomore campaign as Benson has gotten off to an impressive 7-4 start and sits at #10 in the state at the moment. She is an elite athlete and on-ball defender who sets the tone defensively for the Techsters night in and night out. In addition to her obvious abilities on defense, Massey has been elevating her game on the offensive end as well, as shown by her big-time 16-point, 8-rebound performance in the close loss to Clackamas. The sophomore is looking scary and she will only continue to get better, and it all starts with her inspiring play on the defensive end of the floor.
