Entering Wednesday’s evening’s get-together, Hampton County not only was the lone team in the region to post a double-digit win total, the Hurricanes also were at the top of the region standings.
As for the Jaguars, they entered the day’s play having gone 2-1 in region following victories over Barnwell and Edisto but a defeat at the hands of Woodland.
This one would go the way of Hampton County by virtue of a 56-35 victory over Ridgeland-Hardeeville.
Quarter-By-Quarter
At one point in the third quarter, Ridgeland-Hardeeville grabbed a 3-2 lead. That advantage for the homestanding Jaguars would be short lived as Hampton County embarked on a 10-0 run. With one in the books, the Hurricanes’ lead was 14-9.
Midway through the ensuing frame, Hampton County went on another scoring binge that upped its lead into the double digits. As halftime commenced, the Hurricanes had a 35-23 lead over the Jaguars.
The third quarter was a very slow-moving frame. In fact, it concluded five minutes prior to the scheduled tip of the Hampton County vs. Ridgeland-Hardeeville boys contest. It was also a frame that saw the Hurricanes maintain its lead as it was 49-32 through three quarters.
Good news for the Jaguars in the fourth quarter was that points were coming at a premium for the Hurricanes. The bad news was that Ridgeland-Hardeeville was also having a hard time putting up points on Hampton County’s defense and that sealed the Hurricanes’ 12th win of the season and third in region.
Primetime Performers
Concluding her evening with a. 12-point performance was freshman Lyric Jones Lyric Jones 5'7" | SF Hampton County | 2027 State SC . She did the bulk of her damage in the first half as Jones tallied nine of her 12 in the first pair of frames. Jones is one of two freshmen on Hampton County’s roster.
The Hurricanes’ bench helped out big time in the team’s scoring parade. Included in that was sophomore guard Serenity Jackson. She added nine points to Hampton County’s total – including seven in the first half.
A pair of eight-point scorers also were key in securing the Hurricanes’ victory on Wednesday. One of those was off the bench in the form of Sanyah Sanders – a junior guard. Sanders also had the lone 3-pointer Hampton County connected on for Wednesday’s game.
Another of the eight-point scorers was senior center Kaira Garvin. While she may have had only one field goal for the game, she greatly added the Hurricanes’ offensive efforts with six made free throws.
Pacing the Ridgeland-Hardeeville scoring efforts was junior Jaden Exley Jaden Exley 5'7" | SF Ridgeland-Hardeeville | 2025 State SC . She finished with 13 points. Hampton County’s defense managed to hold Exley to only one field goal – a 3-pointer – but had plenty of chances to aid the Jaguars’ cause at the free throw line.
We’ve Got Spirit, Yes We Do!
Even though the game took place at Ridgeland-Hardeeville’s home court, Hampton County having its cheer squad on hand certainly gave it more of a neutral site feel.
Clean Sweep
Hampton County’s boys team followed up the girls win by claiming a 60-46 victory over Ridgeland-Hardeeville.
What’s Next?
Tuesday will be when both of these teams return to the court. Hampton County will be on the road at Edisto while Ridgeland-Hardeeville will host Woodland.
