The day’s first game saw Mt. Zion Prep easily handle Oxon Hill. A couple of players stood out to me, but the one that impressed me the most was Junior G/F Nyla McFadden. Nyla is crafty, talented, and athletic. She was fantastic on defense and did well in the game. Several times, Nyla would grab rebounds and take them coast to coast. She had a variety of moves to get what she wanted, and her handle and vision were on display all game. She finished with 16 points and was the player of the game in a 16-point Mt. Zion prep win.
Another really impressive player on Mt. Zion Prep was Junior guard Jniya Weaver. Jniya knocked down a couple of threes and used turnovers and run-outs to get easy points. She has a fantastic-looking jump shot and had a productive and efficient outing. She finished with 14 points.
Oxon Hill had a lot of trouble scoring in this game at times, but one of the lone offensive bright spots was Junior guard Damia Worthy. Damia was aggressive and decisive and did great attacking the rim. She drew a lot of fouls and got a lot of points at the line. She is quick and has a great handle—an excellent showing for Damia.
Highlights
Central Pointe Christian beat up on Riverdale Baptist pretty badly, and this game was out of reach by halftime. Jayshylnn Vega was one of the numerous impressive players on this Central Pointe team. She came out playing hard and doing almost everything right. She was committed to getting to the rim and drawing contact. She is a tremendous passer in multiple ways. She found shooters and also did a great job running Pick & Rolls. She had total control of the game and had everything you wanted from your PG.
As good as Jayshlynn Vega was, she might have been outshined by Sofie Nunez. Sofie got active early, knocking down all 4 of her three-point attempts in the first quarter. She had a couple of layups and had about as perfect of a first half as you could have. She had almost 20 in the first half and was the player of the game for this one. This Central Pointe team is outstanding and was one of the most impressive teams on the day.
