Continue ReadingOn Tuesday, February 13th, the Raymon Kellis Cougars traveled to Mesa to take on the Mustangs of Dobson in the opening round of the Open Division Playoffs. The first half was pretty close until the midway point of the 2nd quarter. It looked as if the Cougars were beginning to pull away as they built up an 8-point lead. The Mustangs showed they were a veteran team by closing the lead down to 4 at the midway point. The 2nd half of the game was a battle as Dobson tried to keep the young Cougars at a distance. Ultimately, the veteran Mustangs pulled out the victory 53-49 to advance to the next round.
Here I look at a few of the standouts from this contest.
Jaziah Billey Jaziah Billey 5'4" | PG Dobson | 2025 State AZ Dobson
Billey did her job as the point guard, and that was to put her team in the position to get good shots. She consistently broke down the defense off the dribble using her quickness and good handle. Jaz had some passes that were so good that they surprised her teammates.

The value of Jensen won’t just appear in the box score. She played excellent defense in the post by making the opposing players work for everything they got. She was also very effective on both the offensive and defensive boards, getting her team extra shot attempts.

Luz did a little bit of everything for the Cougars. She hit perimeter shots as well as put the ball on the floor. On the defensive side, she displayed active hands and quick feet. She also rebounded well for her position, as she has a good feel for the ball coming off the rim. She’s a stock riser in her class.

Malone played very solid despite not being fully healthy. She’s a bigger guard who got her shot off easily over the top of the defense. She showed a nice touch from the three-point line. On defense, she was active and displayed the ability to switch off to defend multiple positions.

The rising sophomore struggled at times due to being double-teamed and early foul trouble. Every time she went to make a move, there was a second defender and sometimes a third coming at her. This was a sign of respect. She still rebounded well and contested shots with her length and athletic ability.

Mallory was a one-person press break at times. She has a low center of gravity and is quick with the ball from end to end. She was able to get into the teeth of the defense and cause havoc. She showed a nice floater and range well past the three-point line.
