One of the two teams vying for the Region 1-A championship was Southside Christian – a team that was ranked in the top 10 in the most recent SCBCA poll and has been undefeated in region play. The other was St. Joseph’s Catholic which has compiled 15 wins to Southside Christian’s 13 despite only one region loss.
The Knights changed that 15 into a 16 as they earned a 45-28 victory over the homestanding Sabres.
Remember What Happened Last Time?
Revenge was sweet for St. Joseph’s Catholic given how that one loss in region came about. It came against the same Sabres on Jan. 19. The Sabres eked out a 37-35 win on the Knights home floor.
The Jan. 19 affair was originally scheduled to be at Southside Christian before a problem with its venue had the two schools switch the venues for both get-togethers.
Quarter-By-Quarter
The majority of the first quarter was going the Knights’ way. A combination of efficient offense and holding Southside Christian to only two made field goals allowed St. Joseph’s Catholic to grab an early advantage. That lead was 12-5 with one complete.
One had to think the Sabres would respond – and they did with a 7-0 run to tie the game. Midway through the contest, the Knights would respond again with a 6-0 run which prompted a Southside Christian timeout. St. Joseph’s would bring a 21-15 lead into the half.
Both teams found a bit of success with putting the ball through the basket in the third quarter, but it was slightly more the case for St. Joseph’s than Southside Christian. It was Knights 35 and Sabres 25 with eight minutes left to play.
St. Joseph’s put an exclamation point on this one by outscoring Southside Christian by a margin of 13-3 in the final frame. The Knights were successful in avenging the earlier home blemish from mid-January.

Eight of her 11 occurred in the first quarter and she had another productive evening from behind the rim with three 3-pointers.
Southside Christian had a rough evening overall on its home floor, but the heroics of junior guard Libby Anne Austin certainly were a bright spot. Austin scored 15 points – including 11 in the first half. When she was placing points on the board, the Sabres had a chance.
