As March transitions into April, there are still a number of noteworthy seniors across South Carolina who have gone unsigned. Not to mention the AAU schedule will serve as the beginning of a recruiting blitz for many 2025s and even 2026s.
Recently, we have seen commitments, de-commitments and updates on the recruiting statuses of a few high-profile 2024s. Without further adieu, a bit of news and notes as Prep Girls Hoops is hot on the Palmetto State recruiting trail.
Earlier this month, UNC-Asheville announced that Honey Brown would not be retained as head coach of the Bulldogs. Brown was at the helm of UNC-Asheville’s program for the past four seasons. As a result, the standout from 3A (soon to be 4A) Wren re-opened her recruitment and has generated a bevy of interest. Since McGowens did so, Furman, Bucknell, Northeastern, North Carolina A&T and Niagara extended offers her way only for the Hurricanes star to announce on Mar. 30 that she will be remaining in the Palmetto State to play her college ball with the Paladins. McGowens concluded her 2023-24 season averaging 20.2 points, 5.8 rebounds, 5.1 assists and 3.3 steals to lead the Hurricanes to a second consecutive berth in the 3A state championship game.
Highlights
As her career wearing one shade of red – that of 4A South Pointe – comes to a close, Morris will soon sport another shade of red as she steps into the college ranks. That shade of red being maroon – more specifically, the maroon of the North Carolina Central University Eagles. NCCU plays in the Division I Mid-Eastern Atlantic Conference (MEAC). This past season, the Eagles advanced to the semifinals of the MEAC tournament. Morris concluded her high school career having averaged a double-double of 18.3 points and 10.1 rebounds in 29 games to go alongside 3.9 steals. A Star is about to be born in the MEAC.
Croskey was also one of the latest commitments from the Palmetto State as of this writing. She finished her high school basketball days in the most emphatic way possible – with a state championship. Croskey helped bring 5A state hardware to Sumter following an perfect 25-0 season that culminated in a 60-42 victory over Rock Hill at the Florence Center. Croskey announced that she will play her collegiate ball at Francis Marion. The Patriots have been extremely successful in bringing in-state talent to the Pee Dee in recent seasons. Croskey is the latest and she concluded her high school career not only with a state crown but by averaging 20.5 points, six rebounds, 4.9 steals and 4.2 assists as a Gamecocks senior.
We move to a yet unresolved decommitment. Earlier in the month, Margaret Richards stepped down from her post as head coach of Alabama A&M. Coaching changes typically have domino effects – including decommitments. Gray recently announced her decommitment from Alabama A&M, re-opening her recruitment process. Whoever gets Gray is getting the multi-talented star who led 4A A.C. Flora to a berth in this past season’s state championship game. Whoever also gets her is getting the Most Valuable Player at this year’s Carolinas Classic. Gray averaged 17.3 points, 5.3 rebounds and 3.2 steals in 31 games for the Falcons.
Birch had a resurgent season for SCISA 4A Northwood Academy in her return from a knee injury. She competed in 28 games this past season averaging a double-double of 19.4 points and 12.1 rebounds to go alongside 4.1 assists and 3.9 steals per contest. Her stellar play led the Chargers back to the 4A state championship game – and this time Northwood Academy gave Heathwood Hall everything it could handle (and then some) at the Sumter County Civic Center. Birch recently announced on her social media account that she received an offer from Grayson College – a Texas junior college located close to the Texas-Oklahoma state line.
Prior to 2A (soon to be 3A) Silver Bluff’s 2023-24 season concluding at the hands of Gray Collegiate in the Upper State semifinals, Taylor already had received offers from Voorhees, USC-Salkehatchie and Clinton College. She recently landed a fourth offer from Benedict College – then announced her commitment to the Midlands-based HBCU. Taylor had a strong close to her high school career as she averaged 15.8 points, 4.1 steals, 3.8 assists and 3.7 rebounds in the 20 games that she took to the court for the Bulldogs. Her superb play also earned a 22-2 record for Silver Bluff.
