In the article below we talk about five prospects to know about prior to their Freshman year of high school ball. Each player has displayed perseverance and knowledge of the game at a higher level then most I’ve seen from the rest of their age group.
Thanks for tuning in and enjoy!
Braylyn Birmingham Braylyn Birmingham CG Norwalk | 2028 IA is a prospect that is going to follow in her sisters footsteps and become a producer at the high school level over the next couple of years. Birmingham stands at 5’8, while being able to grow up and watch her older sister Bailey, absolutely dominate these past few months at the Varsity level. This doesn’t seem like it may be important to many but it really could mean everything for Braylyn down the road. If she can understand how, why, and in which ways that her sister is being successful now, she can use that for herself while adding her own touch onto things moving forward. Braylyn seems to be a little bit smaller then her sister was at this age but there is still room to grow over the next few seasons. She plays moreso the Wing, compared to the Combo Guard spot with her ability to handle and understand situational basketball. As long as she has the right guidance, I think she is going to come into the Norwalk system and do pretty well. There are a lot of outside factors but this is someone who could grow into the role of a producer in more ways then one over these next four years on the hardwood.
One of the most impressive prospects coming into their Freshman year across the State of Iowa is Guard, Kalyn Scamman Kalyn Scamman 5’9″ | PG Shenandoah | 2028 IA of Shenandoah High School. Scamman has been very impressive over the past two season at the middle school level but high school is a completely different ball game. She has demonstrated that she can do it all offensively. She can catch in the post and score with a counter move and her back to the basket, she can catch and knock down shots from anywhere on the floor, she can pass like a PG and distribute off of the dribble to an open teammate, and she is ALWAYS bringing a positive vibe to the floor from the looks of it. As it goes for prospects that could turn out to be really special, keep an eye on this one. She will be competing this Spring with ETG Midwest Elite 3SSB out of Nebraska, playing up an age level. This says a lot to me. This is a program that is going to compete for nationals with every high school age group so that she gotten the nod to move up is impressive. I’m hoping she can put on a show and make everyone else around her better. If she does that, then watch out everyone come the Winter High School season.
Highlights
Another individual that will be playing up some times this AAU season by the looks of it is Julia Van Keuren Julia Van Keuren 6’0″ | SF Waukee | 2028 IA of Waukee High School. Van Keuren has height, active hands, a smooth shooting stroke, and a physical presence when she is determined. This Winter she will be lacing up with a program that put together a really nice season this past few months in the Waukee Warriors. With the Warriors bringing a ton of talent back from the 2023-2024 season, I’m not sure that Van Keuren will see the Varsity floor right away but she should be on JV with a chance to prove herself. She has better height than most her age and she is coordinated. If I know anything about girl’s high school basketball, it’s that those two things are usually a recipe for success in one way or anther. When I saw her on the floor with other talented middle school players across the Midwest a few months ago, she held her own so if she can just stay dedicated and adapt to the high school life style, she should be someone we speak about more often as we move down the road.
One of the more interesting players from this Class coming in comes to us in the form of Alaysia Williams Alaysia Williams 5’5″ | PG Kennedy | 2028 IA . Wiliams is a quick PG, who understands her role and position with her team’s to a T. She isn’t someone that tries to do too much, while being a creator with the basketball in a number of different ways. This winter she will be lacing up with Kennedy High School, following an AAU season where she will be playing up with the Iowa Ball Stars 15U team. This Kennedy program has always done it right in my eyes so if they can develop Williams into an even more well-rounded prospect, she is going to be a top player out of this 2028 Class at the end of the day. To grow, you have to struggle. You have to understand where you stand compared to others, while aways being willing to adapt. I think Williams has the ability to do all of this right now but we just need to see it first hand. I don’t think she is going to play Varsity as a Freshman but I could be mistaken. If she really puts on this Spring, we will have to reevaluate that come this Winter.
The Iowa City Liberty women’s program put together a year to remember last season. They demonstrated that they are young, talented. and going to be a name around Iowa for a long time to come. A player that will be joining them at the Freshman level these next few months is Natalie Schechinger Natalie Schechinger 5’7″ | PG IC – Liberty | 2028 IA . Schechinger is a Point Guard, that sets the tone for the rest of her team. Each time she laces up her kicks and takes the floor, she is making her presences felt in a number of ways. She can control pace of play, she understands what her team’s objectives are, and she knows to put her teammates on the floor in the correct spots if she wants to make her offense work. This is another situation where I don’t think she will play Varsity as a Freshman just because of how talented the returning players will be but who knows. If she has a great AAU season with her All Iowa Attack EYBL team and she puts together a fantastic pre-season, she could make it happen but only time will tell.
