High school tryouts are quickly approaching. Growing up, I remember the excitement of reading preview magazines for my favorite sports teams and learning about key players before the season started. The enthusiasm and excitement I have for the Michigan Varsity Girls Basketball season has been building since the end of AAU, which leads to my endeavor to write these conference preview articles. Every coach and team in the state has the desire to perform better than they did the previous season in their conference and in the playoffs. Each year there are coaching changes, graduations, transfers, and varsity additions that shift the dynamics of teams in the conference. The Central Michigan Athletic Conference consists of 10 teams: Bath, Dansville, Fowler, Laingsburg, Lansing Christian, Perry, Pewamo-Westphalia, Portland St. Patrick, Potterville, and Saranac. Each team plays twice with the best team earning the conference championship. 2023 results, 2024 predictions for the CMAC, and player previews for each team are included below.

2023-24 Season Results

CMAC champion: Portland St. Patrick's (17-1), Runner-Up: Fowler (16-2)

2024-25 CMAC PRE-SEASON POWER RANKINGS

1. Aubri is an ultra-aggressive defender who works tirelessly to deflect passes and create steals on defense. She drives full speed through defenders to score layups and earn free throws. Aubri has a smooth shooting stroke from 3-point distance and finds open teammates with her passes. Aubri will be an exciting prospect to watch in the CMAC this winter.

Dansville

2023-24 Overall Record: 13-10, Conference: 11-7

CMAC Awards: Megan Zeitz (2024, SAU) First-Team, Ryker Graff (2027) Honorable Mention

Isabella stepped into a contributing role as a sophomore at Dansville, earning an Honorable Mention selection. With the graduation of Zeitz (SAU), I expect Isabella to carve out a large chunk of the primary ball-handling responsibilities this winter. She has a smooth perimeter jumper, splits defenders with her determined downhill drives, and throws accurate passes with either hand to teammates. Isabella moves to space effectively and will be a guard to watch for the Aggies in 2024.

Fowler

2023-24 Overall Record: 24-4, Conference: 16-2

CMAC Awards: Katie Spicer (2025) First-Team, Grace O'Hare (2024) First-Team, [player_tooltip player_id='1158090' first='Isabella' last='Halfmann'] (2027) Second-Team, [player_tooltip player_id='1220752' first='Brooke' last='Weber'] (2026) Honorable Mention

Katie shined bright for Fowler as a junior, helping the Eagles soar to a semifinal appearance at the Breslin Center. Her scoring precision was evident on the travel circuit. Katie has lethal accuracy from 3-point range and finishes through contact to score at the rim. Her excellence on the court earned First Team CMAC Honors and a D4 AP All-State Selection. It looks like Katie is ready for a dominant senior season in 2024.

Read More About Katie

Laingsburg

2023-24 Overall Record: 13-11, Conference: 9-9

CMAC Awards: Bella Strieff (2024) Second-Team, Ella Merrill (2024) Honorable Mention

The cavalry has arrived for Laingsburg as they have a top freshman prospect in the state joining their ranks this winter. Brooklyn has proven her capability to standout against older grades on the travel circuit and at showcase events. Now it's her time to prove it as a varsity player in the CMAC. Brooklyn scores as a face-up driver and perimeter shooter. She has a balanced shot off the dribble, solid footwork in the paint, and converts finishes off two feet. Brooklyn is a gritty defender, determined rebounder, and passionate player. I am going to call my shot early that Brooklyn will be All-Conference as a freshman if she performs like she has leading into the 2024 season.

Read More About Brooklyn

Lansing Christian

2023-24 Overall Record: 11-13, Conference: 6-12

CMAC Awards: [player_tooltip player_id='996558' first='Lydia' last='Brogan'] (2025) Second-Team, [player_tooltip player_id='1171101' first='Ava' last='Mustapha'] (2025) Honorable Mention

Lydia earned a Second Team All-Conference selection as a junior, but she will be in a great position to challenge for a First Team nomination in 2024. Lydia causes matchup challenges for opponents with her length, strength, and shooting efficiency. Lydia scores inside using quality pivots and step-throughs but also drains perimeter shots beyond the arc. She rebounds, blocks shots, and contributes in every aspect to help the team succeed. Lydia is a must-watch prospect for the Pilgrims this winter.

Read More About Lydia

At the Buzzer

Evan Bell is currently a scout for Prep Girls Hoops and Director of [program_tooltip program_id='923712' first='Prepare' last='2 Win Basketball'] .
