High school tryouts are quickly approaching. Growing up, I remember the excitement of reading preview magazines for my favorite sports teams and learning about key players before the season started. The enthusiasm and excitement I have for the Michigan Varsity Girls Basketball season has been building since the end of AAU, which leads to my endeavor to write these conference preview articles. Every coach and team in the state has the desire to perform better than they did the previous season in their conference and in the playoffs. Each year there are coaching changes, graduations, transfers, and varsity additions that shift the dynamics of teams in the conference. The Central Michigan Athletic Conference consists of 10 teams: Bath, Dansville, Fowler, Laingsburg, Lansing Christian, Perry, Pewamo-Westphalia, Portland St. Patrick, Potterville, and Saranac. Each team plays twice with the best team earning the conference championship. 2023 results, 2024 predictions for the CMAC, and player previews for each team are included below.

2023-24 Season Results

CMAC champion: Portland St. Patrick's (17-1), Runner-Up: Fowler (16-2)

2024-25 CMAC PRE-SEASON POWER RANKINGS

1. Abigail contributes in many areas to help her team compete. She keeps her hands active on defense to deflect the ball, steals passes using her anticipation, and scores fast break layups off of turnovers. Abigail has a smooth shot from 3-point distance and creates separation off the dribble confidently with either hand. She drives hard to score through contact and I look forward to following her game closely this winter.

Pewamo-Westphalia

2023-24 Overall Record: 16-9, Conference: 13-5

CMAC Awards: [player_tooltip player_id='895711' first='Elly' last='Bengel'] (2026) First-Team, Brynn Bauer (2024) Second-Team, Logan Drake (2025) Honorable Mention

[player_tooltip player_id='893890' first='Elly' last=''] had a stellar sophomore season for P.W. last year, earning CMAC First-Team Honors. [player_tooltip player_id='893890' first='Elly' last=''] is a sharpshooter from 3-point range and can light up the stat sheet with several triples in any game. Emily is competitive, she doesn't back down from a physical challenge; she battles for defensive positioning and rebounds. Emily contributed mightily to my P2W team at a summer tournament by hitting several clutch 3-pointers, ball-handling poise, defensive pressure, and positive energy. Emily has excellent passing vision, pivoting footwork, and coachability. I expect Emily to be a crucial part of a Vikings team that climbs the CMAC standings in 2024.

Read More About Emily

Saranac

2023-24 Overall Record: 3-21, Conference: 1-17

CMAC Awards: Delaney Regan (2024) Honorable Mention

Maycee is a forward with the potential to be one of Saranac's leaders on the court this winter.
