I've been to 36 high school games so far this season, and some players have surprised me in one way or another. Today, I'd like to highlight a few kids I've noted at games I've attended.

I look at a kid like Mataczynski and am initially curious what she could be as someone who plays 30 minutes per game. When I've seen her, she's been effective with the minutes given and been able to get downhill against other reserve guards. I like her poise with the ball in her hands and believe she has the talent to play at the next level. We'll see how she develops over the next few seasons, but she's shown positive flashes in her minutes thus far.

The School of Languages wing is a physical kid who got the basket at will against a guard-oriented Brown Deer team a few weeks ago. The 5'10 wing is averaging a double-double so far this season and had a first-half double-double when I saw her. Her strength around the rim is noticeable, and the power of will she has to find space under the basket is intriguing. She's talented enough to play at the next level if she wants. It'll just be a matter of where she wants to go.

The Homestead senior is one of my favorite kids to watch in the 2025 class. Zortman may not be the most notable name in that group and may not even play at the next level, but she plays as hard as anyone. Watching her attack loose balls is one of the things I love watching about her most. Her motor is on another level, and she's become a more well-rounded offensive threat. However, her toughness, motor, and ability to play taller than her 5'6 listed height define her as a player.

The Whitefish Bay guard is one of the more puzzling kids in the 2027 class, in the best way possible. She's an undersized guard who plays hard, but I'll never understand how she affects as many aspects of a game as she does. She rebounds the ball well for a kid that doesn't have much size, seems to find space to knock down perimeter shots at an above 40% clip regularly, and finds ways to make plays off the dribble when she has to. It may be a bias of watching her make big shots in the past, but she also has a knack for being in the right place at the right time. Her two late threes against Waunakee are prime examples, but her game on the road against Hartford last season. Late in close games, Volpe finds ways to make something happen.
