Today, we're looking at a few sophomores and juniors thriving early in the season. The first article will regard the sophomore class. After that, we'll highlight the junior class.

Brooklynn Lucassen

Players who can affect winning without having to score with volume stand out, and Lucassen is one of those players. She's a lead guard who makes everything run smoother when she initiates on the offensive end of the floor. She rebounds well for a guard, gets after it defensively, and can turn opposing teams over. What she's done has aided the Hornets to a 3-1 record.

[player_tooltip player_id='874380' first='Olivia' last='Williams']

The Bay Port native was a standout over the summer with [program_tooltip program_id='712778' first='Purple' last='Aces'] and has had a solid start to her sophomore campaign with the Pirates. Williams is a solid attacker off the bounce and can finish in awkward fashions around the basket. The Pirate is a threat to score from the perimeter and has been an excellent point-of-attack defender for a much improved Bay Port unit. She'll be an x-factor for them in prominent FRCC games this season when they line up against programs like De Pere and Notre Dame.

[player_tooltip player_id='1039257' first='Rihanna' last='Barker']

Every coach wants a kid like Barker on their team, and most would rarely take her off the floor. Her defensive prowess is up there with some of the best in Southeast Wisconsin, and she has the lateral quickness and power to guard multiple positions. Her ability to blanket opposing wings will determine how far the Red Devils can go this season.

[player_tooltip player_id='751268' first='Madeline' last='Volpe']

Whitefish is stress-testing the theory of how far a team filled with talented guards can take a program, and Volpe is a key cog in the Blue Duke machine. Her ability to play with or without the ball opens the floor for her teammates, and her ability to sit down and defend kids is why she's one of the guards who starts games for the Blue Dukes. Her teammates trust her to make plays. That trust was perfectly late against Wauankee at Kettle Moraine.

[player_tooltip player_id='986163' first='Tatum' last='Meinen']

I look at a kid like [player_tooltip player_id='986163' first='Tatum' last='Meinen'] and believe she would start at plenty of D1 schools competing to play in the second weekend of the postseason. Her size and ability to knock down perimeter shots open the floor for her teammates to attack off the dribble. As a rotational kid for Muskego, coming in for a kid like [player_tooltip player_id='528122' first='Melena' last='Glysch'] throws a change-up at defenses, which leads to her finding an open shot or two early in her first few stints. Having a kid like Meinen as a rotational player shows how deep this Warriors unit is.

[player_tooltip player_id='751269' first='Madelyn' last='Springer']

After a mass exodus of talent at Hortonville these past few seasons, Springer earned a starting role for the reigning FVA champions. Springer is a kid who doesn't need the ball to do what she does best. She's an undersized guard who defends opposing guards well. Springer is an excellent athlete who can get through ball screens briskly or stick to a kid's hip who wants to run off ball screens away from the ball.
