One of the best aspects of my job is getting to watch talented players grow from young girls with potential to young women with credentials. Nobody's journey has epitomized the enjoyment of that process more than that of [player_tooltip player_id='252379' first='Addison' last='Mack'], the Minnehaha Academy senior who made history over the weekend by reaching 4,000 career points. It has been so much fun having a front row seat to Addi's incredible journey. Let's start there as we recap the Week That Was #6: History over the holidays.

MIND-BOGGLING NUMBERS

The first time I saw Addi play was in the summer of 2019 at a showcase event at Cretin-Derham Hall in St. Paul. Mack was a tiny wisp of a thing back then, but I was blown away by her level of skill and innate feel for the game. A few months later, we watched Addi on a Sunday afternoon playing for the Blake School at Breakdown Fall League. Addi went 12-for-12 from three-point range that day in a pair of running-time contests that would serve as a sign of things to come.

“To say she was impressive is an understatement,” I wrote in my evaluation. “She managed the game like a veteran, displayed a superior skill set, and showed us just how much potential she has… Mack will most likely be the Bears starting point guard. She can't weigh a hundred pounds but Mack will do the heavy lifting this winter.”

Soon after that, I reached out to my friend Karen Blair, who is the associate head coach at the University of Maryland. “You should send this kid a post card or something,” I suggested. “Being first to the table might pay off at some point in the future.” After a years-long recruiting process involving a laundry list of big-time programs, Mack received a plethora of terrific scholarship offers. She committed to Maryland. Addi's signing ceremony a few weeks ago was a full circle moment for me.

Mack's list of accomplishment is long, and now you can add another one. On Saturday night she put up 30 points in a win over Stewartville at the Breakdown Capitol City Classic in St. Paul to surpass the 4,000 mark. That moved her past the great Carlie Wagner and into second place all time in Minnesota history behind only Rebekah Dahlman of Braham, whose record 5,060 points has been the subject of much debate for a decade. Ranked in the top 2 in the Class of 2024 with her [program_tooltip program_id='712687' first='Minnesota' last='Fury'] teammate [player_tooltip player_id='205298' first='Jordan' last='Ode'] of Maple Grove, Mack's numbers over the years are truly remarkable.

As a 7th grader at Blake in 2019-20, Addi put up 523 points in 28 games, averaging 18.7 points per game. After transferring to Minnehaha, Addi posted 454 points in 20 games (22.7) during the COVID-shortened 2020-21 season. As a freshman, she added 736 in 32 games (23.0). In 10th grade she scored 921 in 32 games (28.8) followed by 1,027 in 32 games (32.1) last winter. Through 11 games this season, Addi has already put up 365 points and is averaging 32.2 ppg. The numbers are mind-boggling, and she still has 15 regular season games plus playoffs remaining.

The best part is, Addi is one of the nicest kids I know. She's super intelligent, thoughtful and incredibly well-spoken. She's also a great teammate. Addi has put in untold amounts of work with her trainers Damien Lolar and Robie Tensaie at Verve Basketball ,where she has been an inspiration to countless younger players. Yes, 4,000 points is impressive but so is the person who did it.

MORE MILESTONES

While Addi was cementing her place in the state record books, others were etching their names in the history of their own programs. Among them was [player_tooltip player_id='262910' first='Tori' last='Schlagel'] of Eden Prairie, who over the weekend became the Eagles' all-time scoring leader with 1,466 points. Schlagel scored 28 on Saturday in a win over Rosemount at the District 196 Tournament in Eagan as EP ran its season record to 10-1. The University of South Dakota commit, who is ranked 5th among Minnesota seniors, leads her team in scoring at 21.6 ppg.

[player_tooltip player_id='396438' first='Addison' last='Pilarski'] of Holdingford is no stranger to career milestones. The senior forward has written her name in the Huskers' record book on numerous occasions. On Saturday, Addi scored 28 points and pulled down 13 rebounds in a win over Sauk Rapids-Rice at the Granite City Classic to become Holdingford's all-times points leader with 1,709. The unsigned senior should also reach 1,000 career rebounds in short order.

[player_tooltip player_id='330743' first='Abby' last='Hoselton'] of St. Michael-Albertville contributes in so many different ways for the Knights, including putting the ball in the basket. On Saturday, Hoselton scored 22 points in a win over Chanhassen at the STMA tournament to top 1,000 points for her career. Tori and Abby are long-time teammates with [program_tooltip program_id='712722' first='North' last='Tartan'] EYBL. Hoselton, ranked 7th in the Class of 2025, has committed to South Dakota State.

Danielle Coleman of Lakeville South scored 23 points on Friday in a one-point win over Hill-Murray and followed that up with 18 against Totino-Grace on Saturday, enabling the 6'1 senior to reach 1,000 points for her high school career. Dani is a Top 20 prospect in the Prep Girls Hoops Class of 2024 who has committed to the University of Sioux Falls.

There's one more milestone we should mention. That belongs to junior [player_tooltip player_id='502540' first='Jacey' last='Swanson'] of St. James. The [program_tooltip program_id='712699' first='Minnesota' last='Rise'] guard posted a remarkable 12 assists in a win over Sibley East on Friday and followed that up with 6 more against Blue Earth to reach 500 helpers for her career. Jacey is averaging 5.1 assists per game.

INDIVIDUAL PERFORMANCES

There were plenty of great individual performances at the Granite City Classic over the weekend, including a 42-point outburst from [player_tooltip player_id='433933' first='Chloe' last='Johnson'] of Duluth Marshall, 36 from [player_tooltip player_id='252381' first='Maddyn' last='Greenway'] of Providence Academy and 62 points in two games for [player_tooltip player_id='205310' first='Tori' last='Oehrlein'] of Crosby-Ironton. We'll be highlighting all three of them and more in our Granite City coverage this week.

Elsewhere, 8th grader [player_tooltip player_id='884449' first='Andie' last='Changamire'] continued to impress as she scored 30 points against Sartell-St. Stephen along with 8 rebounds and a school-record 11 steals. The lengthy guard, who is one of the top prospects in Minnesota's Class of 2029, is leading the Bulldogs in scoring at 16.3 points per game and is second in rebounding (5.0 per game) behind her freshman sister [player_tooltip player_id='630285' first='Adele' last='Changamire'] (14 points and 6.8 rebounds per game).

Meanwhile freshman [player_tooltip player_id='897052' first='Tatum' last='Morrison'] of Deer River posted 33 points in a win over East Central. She's averaging 24.2 ppg with a high game of 39. Junior [player_tooltip player_id='515674' first='Aubree' last='Hultman'] of Forest Lake had another strong game with 32 points in a win over St. Paul Como Park at the Hill-Murray holiday tournament.

INTRIGUING RESULTS

There was no shortage of drama over the weekend at the Granite City Classic. PGH scout Ally McGinnis and I were stationed courtside at the College of St. Benedict both days at the only site among the seven tournament locations that hosts exclusively girls games. We saw a series of close contests, upsets and near upsets that leaves the team picture kind of cloudy as 2024 draws to a close. Consider these outcomes:

Class 2A #1 Providence Academy fought back from behind to defeat Class 4A #3 Hopkins.

24 hours later Hopkins pulled off a narrow victory over #1 Maple Grove.

Class 4A Rochester Mayo (unranked) defeated #4 Minnetonka in a thriller on Saturday.

After managing a last-gasp victory over unranked White Bear Lake on Friday, Class 4A #5 Wayzata was beaten by #7 Prior Lake on Saturday.

Class 4A #9 Centennial was trounced by #6 Eastview and unranked Eagan at the District 196 tournament.

Who knows how all of that will impact this week's Minnesota Basketball News rankings, but it seems like the injury-riddled Royals might return to the #1 position in Class 4A and Mayo would replace Centennial somewhere in the top 10. One thing is for certain: After posting their 10th and 11th victories of the season – including their 5th over a Class 4A opponent – Providence is currently the best team in Minnesota regardless of class.
