In case you didn't know, there is a vast area of land located on the other side of the Mackinaw Bridge known as Michigan's Upper Peninsula. A ‘yooper' is a resident of the Upper Peninsula and we want to make sure the girl's basketball prospects who play across the bridge are receiving media coverage and recognition as well. Driving to games from Southeast Michigan is a challenge, but each week I will be tuning into games online. My goal is to help college coaches and our Michigan girls' basketball community in the south learn more about the best players in the U.P. Here are some of the Yooper Hoopers who stood out last week.

Eva was one of the best forward prospects at our PGH Live tournament during the summer and she is off to a prolific start for Houghton. She won the interior battle against Gwinn with 25 points last week and anticipated passes to grab multiple steals. Eva pinned her defender with a strong seal in the low post and then stepped through to score the left-handed layup and one (swished the free throw). Eva sealed her defender again to convert another left-handed and one plus the free throw in the first quarter. Eva finished shots around the rim including offensive rebound putbacks.

Ellie shouldered the load offensively for Houghton during a 49-43 OT win against West Iron County last week. She knocked down three triples for the Gremlins and led the team with 21 points. One of her best moments came when she face-guarded an opponent, deflected the pass, grabbed the ball, and charged full-speed in transition to score a strong and-one layup. Ellie jumps to the ball in her athletic defensive stance and disrupts the offense with her length. She made effective straight-line basket cuts and finished a tough layup in traffic. Ellie swiped the ball away to score a layup off two, made an accurate jump pass over the defense, and pivoted in the low post to score over a defender. She threw long passes to create transition scoring and is a promising prospect for the Gremlins.

Kaitlyn sparked West Iron County's offense by hitting four triples in the second half. She found space in the corner to bury a heart-stopping step-back 3 at the buzzer, sending the game to overtime. Kaitlyn stole the ball, split defenders with her crossover, and accelerated to score a full-court layup. She hustled back in transition to force a carry, dropped down to create a jump ball in the post, and pushed the tempo off defensive rebounds. Kaitlyn led the Wykons with 16 points and delivered a heroic shot in regulation.

Bristol is a guard who is contributing mightily as a freshman for the Wykons. Bristol attacks defenders with her dribble and drives hard to the basket. She drove from the wing and hung in mid-air to score a contested floater off two feet. Bristol buried a smooth elbow jumper, added a triple, and dropped in a soft floater over the defense. She poured in 13 points to help West Iron County compete to the very end.

Piper is a dynamic prospect for a dangerous Sault St. Marie squad that is 4-1 to start the season. She is a playmaker who creates steals on defense and then races down the floor to score layups or dish assists in transition. Piper drives by defenders from the perimeter to score tough layups around the basket and had an extremely athletic reverse against Alpena last week. Piper buries perimeter jumpers off the hop with a smooth high-arcing release and is a talented two-way yooper hooper to watch this winter.
