The Role of a Ball Handler in Team Success

Someone who can run an offense efficiently, get a bucket when needed, defend, and just know how to feed the hot hand. Throughout the state, in all classifications, we have some pretty good guards who do work on the hardwood. I'm talking about girls who have a little sauce to their game as well as the floor general types who just set the tempo for their team. Each style is important as they protect the ball and get their team in sets to execute the play call.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Sure I could be biased because I played the position, but you to have poise and the mental fortitude to get the job done. You are consistently under pressure, you are the QB of the team, you are the extension of the coaching staff, you do the work that sometimes will go unnoticed. The opportunity starts with you and it's your job to do it well and do it consistently. In this state, we have girls who excel at this position and then bring much more to the table.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>There are so many names that could be mentioned for who the top girls in the state are at this position. Eventually we will break it down and get to a list of athletes who would be considered the best of the best. Plays with poise and passion, can run an offense effectively, get a bucket when needed (averages in double figures), shoot from all 3 levels, and defend. She plays with speed, keeping her opponent in front. Talented sophomore who has been battle tested and continues to add tools to her tool belt. She can score from multiple levels, lock up on the defensive end by getting steals, and just competes until the final whistle. When the ball is tipped off, it's game on as she is going to wreck havoc for 32 minutes. She is a heady ball player who is the captain on the floor. Her confidence is oozing out as she approaches every contest as if it was her last. This hungry individual plays with a motor and she competes until there is nothing level. She will shoot it from the arc at a high clip, get down hill to finish or kick out for a 3 ball, and contribute on the defensive end by getting steals. I love her ability to push the ball in the open floor, getting to favorable spots that lead to successful possessions. This kid is nice. A dual sport athlete who competes, which is so important. She brings that competitive nature to the court where she won't be denied. She gets after it on both ends of the floor, contributing in multiple facets of the game. I love her ability to change her pace, get favorable looks, and scorch the bottom of the net. You've heard the term “locked in?” Well this is one of those girls who approaches the game laser focused. Sure she has the ability to go out and score it whenever and wherever, but it's the other things that stand out in my opinion. We all know she can score from all 3 levels, make timely assists, and get steals. The stuff that I am talking about is her ability to move/hustle in real time to get to spots that make the team's counter. She turns her girl if she picks up full, she sprints to help if she is playing off the ball ,she makes hustle plays by diving on the floor and tying up the ball, she communicates, she flat out just gets after it. Actions like these stand out in my mind and this kid does that plus a whole lot more.<br><br></p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- /wp:acf/evaluation-block -->
