Bella Vista/AZ Compass Notes

On February 20th I attended the girls CAA Open semifinal game between Bella Vista Prep and Arizona Compass Prep. This game was loaded with college level talent, and it didn't disappoint. The game was like a heavyweight boxing match as both teams had runs of their own. At the half Bella Vista held a slim 37-33 lead. The third quarter was pretty much the same as the first two quarters. In the 4th quarter Bella Vista began to pull away. In the end they won 67-52.   Here I look at a few of the standouts    Buckner was the X Factor as she did a little bit of everything. She rebounded and at times took it coast to coast. She was under control and was hard to stop once she got going downhill. Her passing might have been what she did best as she hit cutting teammates with some nice passes.     The lefty came out and played with her normal high energy. On defense she was a pest and had multiple deflections or steals. She got to the paint and created opportunities for herself or her teammates. She hit a few deeps threes as well.     AP showed why she is possibly the best two-way player in the state. On defense, she played her normal stellar man defense collecting multiple steals and a block. On offense she carefully picked her spots to shoot from while also handing out some nice assists.     Malone came out the gate hot from three, shooting with extreme confidence. She played solid defense and was extremely active. Amaya also rebounded well from her guard position.     Morales was the conductor of the offense for the Bears. She had the defense on their heels throughout the game with her ability to push the ball up court. She also shot the ball very well from the outside when she wasn't handing out assists.     Reyes came off the bench and provided a spark from the forward spot. She was aggressive offensively and was on the boards often. She even stepped out and showed off her shooting range by hitting a three.     Howell was efficient as they came in this contest. She seemed to be around the ball often. She was throwing her body around in the paint and finished through contact. She finished with 14 points and 6 rebounds unofficially.
