Southern Section: Freshman Standouts (Part 2)

The Southern Section is overflowing with freshman talent, so much so that we had to break our coverage into two parts to do justice to these rising stars. This is the second installment of our Southern Section Freshman Standouts, and it's just as impressive as the first. These athletes are not only proving their scoring prowess but are also making significant contributions to their teams' success in one of the toughest and most competitive sections in the country. Their ability to thrive against such strong opponents highlights their remarkable skill, determination, and impact on the game at such a young age.    Basyrova, a versatile tall guard from Valencia, is making a significant impact on both ends of the court, driving her team forward throughout the season. Her height gives her a natural advantage inside the arc, allowing her to convert tough shots and draw fouls at the basket, whether from offensive rebounds or her own drives. However, what truly sets her apart is her ability to stretch the floor with her shooting from beyond the arc. Basyrova is consistently hitting 2 to 6 three-pointers per game, and her confidence from deep has become a critical part of her scoring arsenal. In fact, she often takes twice as many attempts from three-point range as she does in the paint, leveraging her height and sharp court vision to find open looks. With her team's winning record as proof, this strategy is clearly paying off. Basyrova is no stranger to 20-point performances, making them a regular occurrence as she continues to dominate the game with her unique blend of skills.     Lacy is a dominant scorer and an athletic force in her first year of high school, showcasing her prowess as a multi-sport athlete. With a blend of speed, agility, and hustle, she's making waves both on the court and the field. Averaging over 20 points per game, Lacy is a scoring machine who also racks up an impressive number of rebounds despite not being the tallest guard. However, what truly sets her apart is her defensive tenacity. Lacy ranks in the top 30 nationally for steals per game, regularly disrupting opponents with her quick hands and sharp instincts. Her defensive hustle often translates into easy fast-break points, making her a nightmare for opposing teams. Her court vision, sharpened by her time as a flag football standout, further elevates her game. She reads plays like a seasoned pro, intercepting passes and turning turnovers into quick buckets and, on the field, touchdowns. Lacy's all-around athleticism and determination make her a standout player and a name to watch for the future.     Flores is a versatile scorer, averaging just under 20 points per game, and her impact goes beyond the numbers. With her team's winning record, it's clear she knows how to adapt her game to deliver victory, whether it's knocking down shots from the perimeter or attacking the paint. This freshman showcases a reliable touch both inside and outside the arc, combining accuracy with smart shot selection. Her ability to draw fouls and capitalize at the free-throw line highlights her maturity and game awareness at such a young age. What stands out most is her efficiency from deep. Flores consistently hits half of her three-point attempts, whether it's a modest 1-for-2 or an impressive 5-for-10 performance. She's making each shot count and proving to be a dependable threat from all over the floor. With her sharp decision-making, efficient minutes, and scoring precision, Flores exemplifies a player who knows how to make a meaningful impact for her team.     Machgan is having an impressive season, standing out as a reliable scorer for her team. At just 5'7", she's making her presence felt in the paint, consistently finishing with finesse and precision inside the arc. Her ability to maneuver in traffic and create scoring opportunities near the basket showcases her skill and determination. Beyond her knack for scoring, she's also a frequent visitor to the free-throw line, a testament to her aggressive play and smart decision-making. Machgan's ability to draw fouls not only adds to her scoring but also puts the opposing team in foul trouble—a strategic advantage for her squad. She's highly effective at converting those free throws, which further solidifies her value as a key contributor. While her strength lies in the mid-range and paint, she's not afraid to take and make open shots from deep when the opportunity arises. Machgan is a smart, efficient shooter who takes high-percentage shots, always putting the team's success first.     Folsom is a sharp-shooting freshman who makes her presence known from beyond the arc. While she doesn't rely on height to dominate, her quick release and ability to find space against defenders make her a constant scoring threat. She's been putting up impressive numbers this season, including multiple games where she's hit several three-pointers—sometimes as many as eight. Her shooting prowess has been a bright spot for her team, showcasing her ability to score from almost anywhere on the court. Despite her team facing a tough season with some challenging losses, Folsom's contributions have been key. As she continues to develop her game, we can expect her to bring even more value in other areas of the floor, helping her team secure more victories in the future.
