<p>Now that the Round of 16 has concluded for the 2025 NM Girls State Basketball Championships, it is safe to say, the madness has officially begun!! With 40 games across all class levels (5A-1A) there were nine upsets total. Here is a brief breakdown. </p>

<p>Carlsbad trailed by 10 points heading into the fourth quarter (25-15). Senior shooting-guard [player_tooltip player_id='1054256' first='Abbey' last='Dugan'] put the Cavegirls on her back, scoring a game-high 22 points. </p>

<p><strong>No. 10 Rio Rancho over No. 7 Los Lunas, 56-45</strong></p>

<p>Before the Tournament began, Rio Rancho was <a href="https://prepgirlshoops.com/2025/03/playoff-week-the-three-biggest-questions-in-5a/">viewed as a team capable of recording an upset</a>. That held true as they cruised to an 11-point victory. The Rams biggest lead of the night reached 21 points, which came during the fourth quarter (51-30).</p>

<p>The Huskies overcame an 11-point deficit (39-28) to defeat the Wildcats in the Round of 16. With the win, Hope Christian is now 5-2 on the road in 2024-25, regular and postseason included. What's more, the Huskies are averaging 57.8 points per game over their last five outings.</p>

<p>This was the Eagles fifth time playing the Bears in 2024-25. During their Round of 16 matchup, the game was tied 35 apiece going into the fourth quarter. Ultimately, Crownpoint came away on top, advancing to the Elite 8 and winning the season series, 3-2.</p>

<p><strong>No. 11 Cobre over No. 6 Thoreau, 79-71. </strong></p>

<p>The 79 points scored, is a season-high for the Indians. Freshman [player_tooltip player_id='1068211' first='Hayley' last='Gutierrez'] and junior [player_tooltip player_id='648223' first='Makayla' last='Duarte'], combined for 50 points, scoring 25 points apiece. </p>

<p>With their current record of 22-7, this is the most wins in a single-season for the Hawks since 2016-17 when they went 24-6. The four-point win extends Laguna Acoma's winning-streak to nine games, dating back to Feb. 4</p>

<p><strong>No. 13 Legacy Academy over No. 4 Jemez Valley, 61-49</strong></p>

<p>In terms of seeding, this was the biggest upset in the Round of 16, regardless of class level. However, these teams were very familiar with each other, being from the same District (2-2A). Eden Griffis, who had a team-high 22 points, was one of three players for the Silverbacks to reach double-figures.</p>

<p><strong>No. 11 Mescalero Apache over No. 6 Texico, 49-44</strong></p>

<p>Mescalero Apache is trending in the right direction as they have won four straight games. The five-point victory on the road during the Round of 16, allowed the Chiefs to avenge their loss to the Wolverines (61-33) from Jan. 17 which at that point in time, closed out the non-district portion of their schedule.</p>

<p>The Friday night clash was the fifth meeting this season between Des Miones and Springer. With that in mind, it was the Red Devils who got the last laugh. To say it was a battle between these programs, is an understatement. Springer won two games averaging 51.4 points per game while Des Moines won three times, putting up 55.4 points per game. </p>
