Select Events hosted another quality event in June at Spooky Nook in Pennsylvania. I had the opportunity to watch an impressive New York Grit 17U battle a couple of quality teams. Here are some of their players I was impressed with.

Skyla SImmons, New York Grit, 2026, Guard

5'6" guard out of Murry Bergtraum High. Skyla impressed me with her strong on ball defense as she throttled ball handlers all day. On offense she has excellent ball handling skills and finished strong at the rim. She can play on and off the ball.

[player_tooltip player_id='1154045' first='Leia' last='Perez'], New York Grit, 2027 Guard

Leia's nickname is "Threeia" and that's because she's one of the best shooters from her area. All I saw her do was knock down three-pointers all day. She has a quick release with a nice feathery touch and doesn't need much room to get her shot off. She's very fast and moves well without the ball. She can hit shots off the dribble or in catch and shoot scenarios.

Tatyanna Irving, New York Grit, 2026 Guard/Forward

Tatyanna was a physical presence all day. She bumped every cutter that tried to come through the lane and went out of her way to move bodies around. She did some good stuff on offense too, finishing strong in the paint and setting good screens. She's an exceptional athlete and has a great feel for the game.

Mckenzie Lewis, New York Grit, 2026, Point Guard

Mckenzie is a small but tough floor general that attends Grand Street Campus. She did a great job of probing the defense, penetrating and dishing off to her teammates. When there was nothing there, she retreated and reset the offense. She made some shots but is clearly a pass first player who did a nice job setting the table for others. She's a pesky on ball defender and uses her speed and footwork to disrupt ball handlers. Very skilled player with a lot of heart.

Victory Okpeseyi, New York Grit, 2027, Guard

Quick and tough guard that kept making hustle plays when the team needed it. She stayed on the floor chasing loose balls and was very disruptive in the passing lanes. She was all over the court and showed that she can make shots as well.
