All of you have heard the term “potential.” That word used to drive me insane. I am a huge Tennessee Titans fan, and I remember Coach Jeff Fisher would use the term to describe a guy we just drafted, and he would be a complete bust. Geez. The thought of it just makes me cringe because there would be other decent guys on the board the Titans could have drafted. Well, as the years have gone by, I have learned to embrace the word and turn that negative into a positive, per se.

In today's world, I use the term “potential” for a lot of things. In a sense, I see where Coach Fisher was coming from, but when it comes to basketball, I am starting to see young ladies reach that benchmark quicker than most. Chalk it up to good high school coaches, trainers, AAU programs, and kids are now accelerating faster than they used to. I tell people all the time, some kids wouldn't see the floor for the varsity until their junior year consistently. You might see it in your sophomore year if you were lucky or good. Nowadays, kids are reaching new heights all the time and coming into the fold ready to contribute day 1.

Personally, I love the opportunity to see kids get thrown into the fire early. It may be a sink-or-swim situation, but how they handle that adversity builds their character. Don't quote me on this, but the girls who play early, look at what schools are after their commitment these days. My point is this: our young ladies who have “potential” to be good are usually right where they need to be, especially when they step foot on campus day one. They are ready to compete and get after it. Anything to help their team win.

Here are some young ladies who are pushing that “potential” word and blowing it out of the water.

I am excited to see what type of HS career this young lady will have. She is a scoring threat who can put that ball in the hole. She can dial it up from deep, put it on the floor to go get a bucket; this kid is super talented, and I know she will be a tremendous asset to the Lady Devilettes program. Big things are in store for this young lady.

A young lady who possesses brute strength and brings the physicality to the floor. Her game continues to grow every time she steps foot in between the lines. She plays with a motor and is truly a downhill threat. She is strong and can finish in the painted area. A skill of hers that is underrated is her ability to play on the defensive end. That's where she really makes her mark, along with rebounding. Keep your eyes on this young lady because she is a problem.

A solid ballplayer who will step in and earn some valuable minutes. She is a knockdown shooter from the arc and will also hit the opponent with a one-dribble pull-up. She is the ultimate teammate willing to do whatever it takes to help her ball club win. Look for her to come onto the scene day 1, ready to push for minutes and be a big-time contributor for the Lady Dawgs this upcoming season.

An exciting addition to the Lady Eagles' program. This kid is a hard worker who can shoot the fire out of the ball. She can score from multiple spots on the floor, make timely assists, and contribute in many facets of the game. She will go along with the pieces that are already in place for the Lady Eagles' program. Her addition makes this team even stronger and gives them a bright future, especially when it comes to contention for district titles.

The Mustang's program just expanded their window of state contention. This young lady is one of the best in her class. A mult-level scoring threat who is a selfless ballplayer. She can shoot lights out from deep; however, when she puts it on the floor to get to the basket or even dish the rock, that's when you see how special she is. She comes into a Lady Mustang's program that already has a standard. Look for her to live up to them as well as push the ceiling even higher.
