We are now into the Southern Sectionals for Class 2A. With official IHSAA practices starting this past week, I wanted to continue offering you a glimpse at what the 2025-26 season could hold with a preview of each of the state's 64 Sectionals once again. During the Spring of 2024, the IHSAA moved to a traditional enrollment-based format, realigning all classes with hard enrollment cutoff lines per class instead of taking nearly 400 schools and simply dividing them into four equal classes. With that said, each class has been more competitive, but the bigger classes have fewer teams than the smaller classes. This article serves as one of 64 previewing each Sectional in the state. In this specific article, I will take a look at Class 2A, Sectional #42. Below is a look at the teams in that Sectional, along with some general comments and analysis.
(SAG = Final 2024-2025 Multiclass Sagarin Rating (398 teams); SOS = Final 2024-2025 Strength of Schedule)

Following a 19-8 season and their first Sectional title in nine years, the Monrovia Bulldogs might be even better over the next two seasons, despite graduating their second leading scorer who was a 4-year starter. Why? The remainder of the roster was very young, and the Bulldogs welcome a sizeable transfer. 5-11 Sophomore wing [player_tooltip player_id='999443' first='Zoie' last='Walls'] (14.4p, 8.8r, 1.6a, 3.6s) made an instant impact as a rookie. She is extremely long, fluidly athletic, and she is skilled at all three levels. 5-6 Junior guard [player_tooltip player_id='751061' first='Grace' last='Deaton'] (10.6p, 2.3r, 1.7a, 1.7s) is another perimeter threat who can fill it up outside or create offense for others. 5-5 Junior point guard [player_tooltip player_id='751036' first='Allie' last='Tallent'] (7.8p, 3.2r, 2.2a, 1.8s) is a skillful guard who should be the Bulldogs' primary ball-handler this season. She is also a feisty defender. Add to that 5-8 Junior forward Camryn Wolfe (8.8p, 4.0r, 1.1a, 1.5s), a tough-nosed, hard-working rebounder who can also score it in a variety of spots, and Monrovia already looks strong. But that's not all! In comes 6-1 Junior forward [player_tooltip player_id='992529' first='Brynlee' last='Hamblin'] (4.3p, 3.7r, 1.0s, 1.0b), a transfer from Class 4A Martinsville High School. Hamblin is a long, wiry-strong, bouncy frontcourt athlete who will add a nice interior presence to the above group of guards and wings. Monrovia will definitely compete for the Sectional #42 title, but they might also be a Top 10 team in Class 2A.

If anyone can push Monrovia this season for the Sectional #42 championship, it will likely be Covenant Christian. The Lady Warriors graduated their second leading scorer and six 2025 graduates in total, but they return as much production as just about anyone else in this field. 5-8 Junior wing Moriah Armstrong (13.0p, 6.0r, 1.3a, 2.3s) is their most productive kid, and they look to her for occasional double-doubles. She plays extremely hard and can be a difficult inside-out matchup for opponents. 5-5 Sophomore guard Abbey Jankowski (6.8p, 1.4r) got her career off to a good start as a rookie, and she could become their second double-digit scoring threat this season. She's a capable perimeter shooter, knocking down 40 3-pointers at a 34% rate as a Freshman. 5-8 Senior forwards Jenna Rademacher (3.2p, 3.9r, 1.4s) and Emi Flatt (2.3p, 2.5r), plus 5-7 Junior guard Emma Crane (1.6p, 2.2r, 1.8a, 1.7s), all return significant experience from last season, and they bring rebounding and defense to the floor. If Jankowski takes another step forward and the Warriors can possibly find a third scoring option, they could keep up with Monrovia and give them fits this Winter.

Additional Players to Keep an Eye On: Cardinal Ritter: 5-11 Sophomore wing Lilly Butler (10.8p, 8.1r, 1.6s) and Senior point guard Macie Dill (8.5p, 4.7r, 2.7a, 2.2s); Park Tudor: 5-8 Sophomore wing [player_tooltip player_id='1312218' first='Leyla' last='Smiley'] (9.5p, 4.8r, 2.3a, 2.2s), 5-4 Junior point guard [player_tooltip player_id='751123' first='Sydney' last='Squires'] (7.7p, 4.3r, 4.0a, 3.2s), and Sophomore guard Vera Sollet (7.5p, 2.2r, 1.2a, 2.9s); Riverside: 5-6 Senior wing Whitney Dancler (11.9p, 2.1r, 1.6a, 2.9s) and 5-1 Senior guard Aunna Smith (9.9p); University: 5-9 Senior wing Gabby Culp (8.1p, 8.2r, 2.0a, 1.5s, 1.3b), 5-7 Senior wing Sydney Culp (7.2p, 2.5r, 1.2a, 1.2s), and 5-7 Senior guard [player_tooltip player_id='486499' first='Leah' last='Norvell'] (6.6p, 5.0r, 2.9a, 1.7s)
