In my experience at the collegiate level and beyond, I have continually noticed a trend in hoops that sounds simple but still needs to be emphasized: if you do the intangibles on the floor, you will get noticed and you will get playing time. While these intangibles may slightly vary from program to program the main themes remain the same — and none of them have to do with how much talent you have or how many points you score.

Follow along as I point out a few of these intangibles and highlight players that brought them to the PGH Expo last week in Omaha.

1) Communicate in every aspect of the game.

[player_tooltip player_id='865481' first='Gigi' last='Owens'] out of Lincoln Northeast brought energy and positive communication throughout the showcase last week. No matter the drill Owens was encouraging fellow players, bringing energy, and being a vocal leader on the floor. Additionally I appreciated Owens asking for feedback and looking for additional ways to stand out — lots of initiative in that kid. Owens brings a multifaceted skillset on the floor, confidence, and lots of talk that I know coaches will appreciate.

[player_tooltip player_id='865335' first='Kamryn' last='Scott'] continued to impress me with her professional demeanor and attention to detail. She really bought into coach's instruction at The Expo and it paid off in the scrimmages — the Alma High product came off of screens well to create scoring opportunities, had strong body positioning at the rim, made smart decisions with the ball and was a leader by example. Skillset aside, Scott brought great focus and coachability to Omaha.

When legs got tired and players got gassed [player_tooltip player_id='1277175' first='Emerey' last='Pietzyk'] was there to pick up the pieces. Pietzyk showed plenty of toughness last week in a number of ways — by making the extra basket cut to create a driving lane, or crashing the o boards, to name a few. I also liked her decision-making through fatigue. No matter the time / score she didn't looked rushed and continued to stay poised when her team needed a calming presence or a hustle play.

[player_tooltip player_id='1277900' first='Neva' last='Mackie'] is a player that brings a lot to the table — she's got size, athleticism, touch, and coachability. At 6 foot Mackie smoothly transitioned from bumping forwards in the post to stretching the floor as a big guard, and consistently took in feedback in the process. I gave Mackie tips from the bench and she continued to use that feedback to her advantage. This 2029 product is absolutely one to watch — she's only going up from here and her ability to take in coaching will continue to make her stand out.
