One hour and twenty eight minutes is how long it took to determine who would advance to the State Tournament on Friday in Smyrna, TN. Even before that, let's not forget that Memphis is just recovering from a winter storm. Teams had to scramble to get games played over the weekend. These 2 teams had to play 3 games in 3 days to advance.

This game came down to defense, bench play and free throws.

Let's talk about those Free Throws. There were over 30 free throws attempted in this game. I say over 30 because the last minute of the game…I totally forgot to stat. That's how dramatic the ending was.

The free throw shooting in this game was horrendous. Five players shot 50% from the line and 1 shot about 17%. Those are my unofficial stats.

Shooting Guard. This seventh grader shot 75% from the free throw line. She shot the second highest percentage other than one of her teammates shooting 100% making 2 of 2. The amount of mental toughness it took for this young lady to overcome her shooting struggles in the first half. That was the worst I have ever seen her shoot the ball. The first quarter Bella was very aggressive offensively. However, nothing would fall. She was 1 for 6 shooting and 0 for 2 from the free throw line. She didn't take a shot in the second nor the third quarter. Granted, she had to work for every single shot she took. Nothing was easy for her. In the 4th quarter, she took a different approach and aggressively attacked the basket. She missed her first shot and first free throw. Then she drained 9 STRAIGHT FREE THROWS.

Rebounding Forward. What I just realized as I am writing this eval. My very first middle school game of the season was a Snowden home game. So, it is ironic that I am closing out the season at Snowden. Kadence made me realize that because her play in this game is exactly like what she did in that first game of the season. She absolutely cleaned the boards. I have her down for 12 points and 10 rebounds leading the team in both points and rebounds.

Elmore Park and Snowden are two teams that bring the defensive pressure. This was a very intense middle school game. It got heated between players early on. Players were diving for loose balls. Last minute of the game, there had to be a stoppage of play due to blood on the court.

Explosive Guard. No one was more ready to play this game than this young lady. Maleah did not play in the first game between these 2 teams. I watched her body language and disappointment while she watched her team lose that first game. In this game, nothing was safe with her on the floor. She ran the length of the court twice to block wide open layups. She also assisted on some steals with her quick hands.

High Energy Guard. Second half of the game, Laila was all over the place. She scored all 9 of her points and 3 steals in the second half. Defensively, her length and quick hands caused problems, especially at the top of the press. She plays with such a high motor that brings energy and other intangibles to the game and her team.

I mentioned that bench play was important in this game. The officials blew their whistles from start to finish in this game. So, several players were in foul trouble and forced the coaches to use their bench a lot in this game.

Shooting Guard. Previously, I talked about Danielle's 3 point shooting in a play off game. In this game, she played some key minutes finishing with a made free throw and 3 rebounds. Her biggest contribution was matching up defensive with one of Elmore Parks players because of her length, especially late in the game.
